Be it known that we, JOSEPH A. SHIAY 1.01: and Janos TAYLOR, Jr.,cit i'zens of the United States, residing at Philadelphim'iii the county of Philadelphia and State ofv Pennsylvania, haveinvent'eda certain new and useful lmj irovement in Locking-frocks,
Our invention relates to anew and useful lIIIPIOCCIIlQHt in loeking'h'ooks, and'has for its object to provide an exceedinglysimple, eft'ective-antl satisfactory lever fastener, for the side chains of grips or treads for pneir inatiic tires that will draw them tight-and holdvtheni taut. i t
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the d'ettiils of constructim'iand; combination of, elements hereinafter. set forth and then specifically designated by theclaim. ,t
In. order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may undcrstand how to make and use the same, we will describe its bonstrnction in detail, referring by letter to the accouipanyine' drawing forming a part of. this specification. in
l igure l is a side elevation of the hook in an open position showing a compression spring and a portion ot the chains secured thereto. Fig. 2, a similar view taken at similar to Fig. l showing the hook in its In carrying out our invention as here embodied. A represents the bodyof the hook, which has a number of notches B therein, here shown as two 111 number, for
C of a pneumatic tire grip, and l) repre sents the coinbinedleverand latch, and is pivoted to the body at. F1.- This latchis pro vided with the lugs .l, to which the member (z of the compression spring [I is pivoted.
spring being attached to the opposite end of theside chain. 0. The latclrI) is cut away at. I and I so that in closing, these cut. away portions will prevent the latch from interfering with the link of the chain which is in engagement with oneof the notches 'B. An indentation J is formed in Specification 01 Letters Patent. v npplication filed March 31, 1908. Serial No. 424%07.

the body with which a detent K pressed into thelatch is adapted to engage for holding the latter in its closed position, and thus preventing the link in engagement with the notches from becoming displaced,
In'the use of gm chains for automobiles, great ditficulty an annoyance has heretofore been experienced in tightening up the side chains, it requiring .a special tool for x that purpose which had to be applied to draw up the chain beyond its intended posi 'tion so as to enable theoperator to engage a new link with the hook, and then when the tool was removed the chain naturally t'ell'loack and would often be slack, whereas, by the use of our improvement this disadvantage is entirely overcon'ie, the book being utilized as a lever, it. being only necessary to swing the latch backward to the position shown in F i 1, take. up-all the slack possible by thepu l of the hand, engaging the proper link-with one of the "notches B and thereafter by closing the latch the'opposite end of the chain will bet drawn' forward and sufficiently taut to hold it. in place. The compression spring H when used in connection with our improved hook serves\ thepurpose of keeping thegrip chains. I g
It is to be understood that the end link may be engaged with either one or the other of the notches B, and when the chain is too long for this link to be utilized the I18Xt-SUC-- ceeding link may be used in the sam manner.
It. is to he noted that by the proper arrangement of the pivots E and F to each other that when the latch is closed the draft of the compression spring thereon will be such as to assist in maintaining said latch in its closed position on account of the point of drat't passing below the pivot point E.
llaviug thw fully described our invention what we claim as new and useful, is
A locking hookcomposed of a notched body, a latch pivoted to one end of said body. an outwardly projecting lug on each side of said latch, a chain having one end in J- engagement with one of the nbtches of said body, a compression springsecured to the other end of said chain, a mdmber G. having an intermediate bent partengaging said an even tension upon 80 compression spring and arms which extend affixed our sigpatures in the presenceof two 01:]: opposing sides (if said latclli alnd have subscribing witnesses t eir en 5 ant to arm eyes \viici engage q said. lugs of the latch, said latch being X 1,,f0rmed with cut-away parts andbaving a "detent to -be received in an indentation in itnssesz', I said body provided therefor. Bow. 7. ANSTICE,
'In testimony whereof, we have hereunto l S. M. GALLAGHER.
