ARMAND DUOOMMUN, OF BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA.
sEPARABL'E BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming 'part 'of Letters Patent No'. 634,056, dated october e, 139e.
Application filed December 2'7, 1898. Serial No. 700,384. (No model.) l
To all whom it may concern: A
Beit known that I, AnMAND DUCOMMUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bakersfield, in the county of Kern and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Sep-arable Button, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is the production'of an improved separable button which shall be adapted for use in securing collars to a shirt, with cuffs, and also as a shirt-stud,Y
which shall be so constructed that when the parts composing the same are adj usted one to' the other they will be securely heid in place, which shall have the post and shank so formed that the parts will fit closely and not allow any rotation or frictional movement of one relative tothe other-,thus preventing abrasion and wear, which shall have the post so shaped that the button will not turn in a buttonhole, which shall be provided with a head made in two sections and also with a guard-plate,which shall be simple in construction, cheap in first cost, and easy to repair when necessary, and which withal shall possess many other desirable features and characteristics suitin g it for its intended uses.
tions they will occupy when united and inuse, the view being very much enlarged for the purpose of more clearly disclosing the construction. Fig. 2 is a view of the base or disk in elevation and of the hollow standard or post in section. Fig. 3 shows the springshank, sectional head, and guard-plate detached from the post. Fig. i is a topplan view of the sectional head and guard-plate illustrated in Fig. l. Fig. 5 .is a plan View of a modified form of guard-plate differing from that of Fig. 4 in shape only. Fig. 6
is a cross-sectional plan. view of the post, showing the approximately rectangular form thereof.
Referring to the several figures, the letter A designates the base or disk ofthe button, the saine being of a'circular shape in plan and preferably dished or concave-convex, in order to secure the greatest strength with the least weight of metal; B, the shank or post, made hollow and rectangular, the width be'- ing greater thanthe thickness, .and permanently secured at one end to the center of the base in a position perpendicular tothe plane of the saine.
C C are lips at the top open end of the opposite sides of the post, made by turning the edges of the walls of the post inwardly at right angles or fashioned in any other way;
D designates the spring-shank, having two arms or members rectangular in cross-section, made by bending a suitable pieceV of metal upon itself or by cutting the same from a blank.
E E are recesses or-uotches adjacent the free ends of the spring-shank.
F F' designate the sectional head, madein two parts of similar size and shape and cach secured permanently to one of the free ends of the spring-shank and in such positions that `the straight-line Aedges thereof will be the same distance apart as the distance between the two members of the shank.
G designates the normally open space between the two sections of the head.
His a guard-plate for covering the open space between the two parts of the head, the
part K to the left of the dotted line I in Fig.
4 being permanently fastened by solder or in any other way to the face of the section F of the head.. The plate may in some cases be made integral with one of the sections.. The general circumferential outline of this plate in Fig. 4 iselliptical; but its shape may be changed at will to any other outline-such, for example., as illustrated in Fig. 5. Whatever form may be adopted, it is only necessary to leave a space between the edge of the plate and the edge of the section F equal to the line L, which also is equal to the distance between the dotted lines in Fig. 4:.
To unite the parts of the button, the end of the spring-shank is inserted within the IOC) v open end of the post and then pressed down- Wardly till the recesses or notches E E come in line with the lips C C, when the spring members spread apart automatically and lock the head in place.
To separate the button, the sections F Ii" are pressed together between the thumb and foretngelgthe part F sliding under the guardplate until the sections meet and the spring members of the shank approaching each other till the recesses E E are out of engagement with the lips C O,when the shank can be Withdrawn. y
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have produced a separable button, extremely simple in construction, whichisadapted when the length of the standard or post is varied for use with collars, cuffs, and as astud, which is easily manipulated,y which will be iirmly held in place and against rotation when in use, which by reason of the shape of the post will retain ther sections of the head in such positions that they can easily be pressed together, which is provided with a guard-plate secured to one section of the head only and concealing the opening B,and which possesses many other desirable features.
While I have shown and described but one complete example and one modification of t-he physical embodiment of my invention, I do not thereby intend to limit the scope thereof to such examples, inasmuch as my improvements may be adopted and imitated under other forms and shapes which involve unsubstantial departures. All such embodiments I intend to embrace within the scope of my claims.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The herein-described separable button consisting of the base or disk A; the rectangular hollow standard or post B having lips C, C; the spring-shank D having recesses or notches E,E; the sectional head; and a guardplate secured to one section of the head only; in substance as set forth.
2. Aseparable button made up of two parts, one of said parts embracingl a disk and a standard having lips; and the other part embracing a notched spring-shank having sections of the head attached to its free ends,
and a guard-plate secured to one section of the head only; in substance as set forth.
3. The combination in a separable button, constructed substantially as described, of a base or disk; 'a standard or post having lips; a spring-shank a head made in two sections; and a guard-plate attached to one section of the head only.
4. The combination in a separable button,
yconstructed substantially assetforth, of a sectional head provided with a guard-plate,
attached to one section of the head only; in substance as set forth.
5. The combination in a separable button, of a rectangular post having lips C, C, at opposite sides thereof; and a spring-shank hav- -ing a sectional head, guard-plate, secured to head equal to the distance of the open space G between the sections.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
