Beit known that I, JOHN COLWELL BYXBE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pensacola, in the county of Escambia and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Shoulder-Rest for Buggies or Carriages, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in shoulder-rests for buggies and carriages.

The object of the present invention is to provide for buggies and carriages a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device designed to be readily applied to the back of a seat and to the rear bow of a buggy or carriage top and adapted to afford a comfortable rest or support for the shoulders and capable of being readily removed when it is desired to lower the top of the buggyor carriage to which it is applied.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

1 designates a curved arm-rest designed to "be constructed of any suitable material and having its inner face rounded from its upper to its lower edge and presenting a flat rear or outer face which is straight in vertical section and curved in longitudinal section to conform to the general configuration of the arm-rest. The arm-rests are designed to be constructed in pairs and to be arranged at opposite sides of avehicle, and each arm-rest is provided at its front end with a catch 2 and atits rear end with an arm 3, which is adapted to engage a socket 4 of the seat-back 5 of the vehicle. shaped and engages an opening 6 of an angleplate which forms the socket 4. The angleplate, which fits against the upper and rear faces of the seat-back, is perforated for suitable fastening devices and is provided at its top with the said opening 6. The depending portion of the arm is angularlybent between its ends to form a shoulder 7, which engages the upper face of the socket, whereby the rear end of the arm-rest is supported thereon.

The reararm 3 is preferably formed integral with a reinforcing bar or brace which extends longitudinally of and is secured to the rear or outer face of the arm-rest, and the front end of the bar or brace is extended to form the fixed member .9 of .the catch or clamp which secures the arm-brace to the rear bow 10 of the carriage-top. The inner or free end of the movable member of the clamp or catch is curved outward, as clearly shown in Fi 9 c' a to enable it to be readily grasped by the operator to swing it into and out of engagement with the headed stud in applying the armrest to a vehicle and in removing it therefrom. The rear end of the arm-rest is detachably and rigidly interlocked with the seat-back, and as the front end is firmly secured to the rear bow the device forms an efficient brace and is adapted to support the carriage-top, besides affording a comfortable rest for the shoulders.

The invention has the followingad vantages: The arm-rest, which is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, possesses p great strength and durability,and it is capable of being readily applied to vehicles of the general character illustrated in the accompanying drawings. It is adapted to afford a comfortable support for the shoulders of the occupant, and it forms an efficient brace for supporting the carriage-top. It may be readily removed when it is desired to lower the top of a carriage,and it is capable of being quickly arranged in position for use.

Changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacridoing any of the advantages of this invention.

'What is claimed is- 1. Ashoulder-rest for buggies and carriages extending from the seat-back to the rear bow and provided with means for detachably connecting it to such parts, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. A device of the class described comprising a curved shoulder-rest arranged horizontally and provided at its rear end with means for detachably mounting it on the seat-back, and a clamp or catch arranged at the front end of the arm-rest and adapted to engage the rear bow detachably, substantially as described.

3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a vehicle, of a shoulder-rest extending from the back of the vehicle to the rear bow and detachably engaging the latter, substantially as described' 4. A device of the class described comprising a socket designed to be arranged at the seat-back, and a shoulder-rest designed to extend from the seat-back to the rear bow, and provided at its front end with means for engaging the latter, said shoulder-re'st being provided at its rear end with a depending arm, detachably fitting in the said socket, substantially as described.

5. A device of the class described comprising a socket designed to be mounted on the seat-back, a curved shoulder-rest provided at its rear end with an arm fitting in the said socket and having a shoulder for engaging the same, and a clamp or catch mounted at the front end of the shoulder-rest and adapted to engage the rear bow, substantially as described.

G. A device of the class described comprising a shoulder-rest designed to be mounted at its rear end on the seat-back, and a clamp or catch arranged at the front end of the shoulder-rest and comprising a fixed member having a curved portion to receive the rear bow, and a movable member pivoted to the fixed member at one side of the curved portion thereof and detaohably engaging a projection at the opposite side of the curved portion, substantially as described.

7. A device of the class described compris in g a shoulder-rest, a bar or brace secured to the outer face of the same and extended beyond the ends thereof, one end of the bar or brace being L-shaped and the other end being provided with a concave portion, a socket adapted to receive the L-shaped end of the bar or brace, and a pivoted member mounted on the other end of the bar orbrace, substan tially as described.

8. A device of the class described comprising an angle-plate provided with a slot, a shoulder-rest provided at its rear end with an L-shaped arm engaging the slot of the angleplate, and a clamp or catch arranged at the front end of the shoulder-brace and adapted to engage the rear bow of a carriage-top, substantially as described.
