N. PETES. FRUKO-LITHOGRAPNER. WASK NGTDN D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J OINVILLE F. FOWLER, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN DASH-RAIL FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,773, dated December 10, 1878;
application filed September 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OINVILLE F. FOWLER, of Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dash-Rail Fasteners and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved dash-rail fastener, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fastener itself.
The same part in the two figures is designated by the same letter.
This invention relates to certain improvements in dash-rail fasteners for Vehicles, by which the rail may be readily and easily slipped in position on the dash and the fastener itself detachably secured in place; and to these ends it consists in the employment of thimble-shaped sockets or receptacles, having depending clamping arms or clasps, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawing, A is the dash of a vehicle or carriage. B isthe rail, in form a hollow or slotted tube, fitted upon the top edge or end of the dash by slipping it endwise thereon, with the said edge of dash entering its slot.
C is one of the dash-rail fasteners, there hein g two to a dash, one at each end. This fastener is provided with a thimble-shaped socket or receptacle, 0, which rests upon the upper edge of the dash and receives the end of the dash-rail B, the other end thereof, in practice, being similarly confined. The inner end of this receptacle is provided with depending curved arms or clamps c c, which embrace or hug the leather-covered frame at I its upper end, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus serve to secure the fastener itself and the da shrail firmly in position upon the dash.
In lieu of the clamping arms 0, jointed clips or clasps may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention.
This fastening enables the fastener itself to be quickly and detachably connected to the dash, and the rail to be readily and easily slipped in a fastened position, or as readily removed from the dash.
This device is possessed of the further advantage of dispensing with additional fastenings, such as screws or bolts, in securing it firmly in position, which is due to its detailed or thimble-shaped construction and the adjusting of its arms 0 to the dash, they being made to fit tightly, and slightly sprung upon the thickened upper edge of the dash, as seen in Fig. 1.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The dash-rail fastener 0, consisting of the thimble-shaped receptacle 0, having clampingarms on clips 0 c, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the dash-frame and dash-rail B, of the thimblc-shaped fastener O 0, having the clampingarms or clips 0 a, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOINVILLE F. FOYVLEB.
