Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM H. PEIRSOL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEAD-RESTS FOR CAR-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,161, dated February 3, 1874; application filed September 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. IErnsoL, of the city and county of Philadelphia'and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Headltests for Car-Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a vertical section of the device embodying my invention in line w m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a rear View.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in a head-rest for car-seats, which is hinged thereto. so as to be readily swung up to operative position, and, when not required, to be folded on the back of the seat, in combination with fastenings for retaining the rest in its positions.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a car-seat, and B the hinged back thereof, the same being constructed and operating as is well known. To the upper and lower sides of the frame of the back B I attach, by hinges C, head-rests D I), which are adapted to be swung onto the top or bottom of the back which is uppermost, as the case may be, and thus form a support or rest for the head of the person occupying the seat A. In practice, I employ a rest for each passenger, although one rest may be made the width of the seat, and thereby meet the requirements of two passengers. E represents a bolt or fastening which is attached to the rest, and engages with the back B, or vice versa, when the rest is in operative position, so that the latter will be properly supported and made serviceable for resting the head of the passenger. On the inner sides of the rests there project pins F F, which are adapted to engagewith a spring fastening or latch, G, on the rear of the back of the seat.
lVhen' the rest is not required for use, the bolts E are released, and the rest is swung on the back of the seat. The pins F then engage with the fastening G, and thereby hold the rests in a folded state.
It will be seen that when the rests are folded the back of the seat may be swung around to face either end of the car without any interference of the rests. When the rests are folded, the upholstered faces thereof will be exposed, and the knees of the passenger of the next seat will come against the lower rests, the yielding nature of which overcoming objection to the location of the rests.
It will also be seen that the rests will not become detached from the backs, and that there is no liability of any part thereof injuring the back of the seat or the upholstering thereof, as is well known to exist where clamps are employed for holding the rests in place.`
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The head-rests D D, hinged to the top and bottom of the back B, so as to fold on said back, in combination with the fastenings E and fastenings F G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
IVILLIAM H. PEIRSOL.
