Description
A. B. BUELL.
RAILROAD GAR SEAT.
No. 8,935. PatentedMay. 11, 1852.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABEL'B. BUELL, or WESTMORELAND, new YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILROAD-CAR SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 8,935, dated May 11, 1852.
,Wcstmoreland, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Railroad-Oar Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ordinary railroad car seat with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a back eievational view of the same.
Similar letters of reference denote similar partsin both figures. l
The nature of my invention consists in attaching to the backs of the ordinary car-seats outer sliding backs, which may be raised or lowered as required.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed fully to describe it.
The drawings exhibit the'ordinary railroadear seat with my improvement attached, which consists. of the outer sliding back or backs, A A, held to the ordinary permanent back, B, by slides a a a and springs 11 b.
The outer backs, A A, operate in the following manner: The permanent back B is hung, as usual, on arms 0 c to pivots d d in the ends or arms 0 e of the stationary seat 0, for the purpose of changing the back to either side of the seat, as is customary. The outer backs, A A, are fitted on the outside of the permanent back B in slides aha, attached thereto, so that y when the back B is in its place on either side of the seat either or both of the outer backs, A A, may be elevated above it to form a higher back to the seat for the purpose of affiording rest to the head, and acting as a screen against draft in night traveling; or the backs A A may be lowered to meet the ground or floor of the car, so as to form a box or receptacle under the seat for passengers luggage, the backs A A being worked up or down in the slides a a a, and the springs b b keeping them in their position when set to any required height.
The drawings represent a double car-seat, the backs A A being for the independent agcommodatiou of two parties only; but it is ob- Vious that any number of outer backs, A A, may be used, according to the length of the seat or number it is designed to carry; or one long outer sliding back only may be adopted, as preferred, and the backs made either in clined or hollow, straight or verticahas found desirable or requisite.
l/Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is
Constructing the backs of railroad-car seats with outer sliding backs, A A, fitting in slides a a. a and held by springs, for the purpose of elevation above the ordinary back or depression below it, as herein shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name beforetwo subscribing witnesses.
ABEL B. BUELL.
