Description

(No Model.)
B. T. BROWN.
HEAD REST.
Patented Oct. 18, 1887.
Inventor jflttomey.
rarns I N il 'HEADFREST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,817, dated October 18, 1887. v Application filed January 26, 1887. Serial No. 225,510. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EGBERT '1. BROWN, of Bufialo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on a Head-Rest for Railway- Oar Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
My present invention has general reference to a head-rest for railway-car seats; and it consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of parts and details of construction, as hereinafter firstfully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings already mentioned, which serve to illustrate my said invention more fully, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved head-rest. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same; and Figs. 3 and at are side-views of a portion of the head -rest, showing the cushion in its various positions.
Like parts are designated by corresponding .letters of reference in all the figures.
' The object of my invention is the produc tion of a simple and very portable and convenient head-rest for travelers use in railwaycars.
To attain this result I construct my improved head-rest of two spring members, A A, each one consisting of a U-shaped frame having spiral twists a ct,terininating in upwardlyprojecting tenons b b, the members A A being bent at c c in opposite directions that is to say, toward each otherand one of them is provided with a socket, G, into which the end of the opposite one enters.
The two upwardly-projecting tenons b b enter a cross-bar, D, having sockets on each end, for the reception of the said tenons, and centrally a passage or slot-hole for the admission of the stem or bar E. This bar has on its upper end a socket, e, for an S-shaped piece, F, forming an intermediary between the said stem E and the cushion G, said S-shaped middle piece having a socket, f, exactly like the socket 6, so that the tenon g on the cushion G may be inserted into either of the sockets e lightness, and the pieces are connected t0- gether by the tenonand-socket joints, so as to be readily separated into the smallest desirable compass for transportation.
In use the members A A are clamped over the back of a car-seat in a manner so readily understood as not to require illustration by drawings, which, owing to the spring like twists a a, maybe easily accomplished. Now the cushion is adjusted to the proper height by sliding the rod E up (or down, as the case may be) until the cushion is in the desired position, when said rod is securely fastened by the thumb screw H in the cross bar D. Should the cushion be too far back, it can be brought forward by removing the S-shaped middle piece, F, and inserting the tenon g of the cushion into the socket e of the rod E, as shown in Fig. 3; but should a still more forward position be required, then the S-shaped middle piece may be reversed, so that it will occupy the position shown in Fig. at, thereby providing a range of adjustment capable of satisfying all the conditions required of an apparatus of the kind described.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure to myself by Letters Patent of the United States 1. As an article of manufacture, a portable knockdown headrest having spring members A A, of substantially U shape-secured together by a tenon-and-socket or analagous joint on one end and a cross-bar having sockets, as described, on the other end, said crossbar having a central passage for a supporting-rod car'- rying the removable head-rest in conjunction with an S-shaped intermediary, F, substantially as and for the object specified.
2. The combination, with the members AA, of substantially U shape, having the spiral twists a a and upwardly-projecting tenons, of the cross-bar D, having sockets for the said tenons I) b and a central passage for the supporting-rod E, the S-shaped intermediary F, invention I have hereto set my hand in'the and the cushion G, said cushion havingatenon presence of two subscribing witnesses. adapted to fit the socket of the intermediary as Well as that of the supporting-rod, all as 5 hereinbefore set forth and described, for the Attest:
purpose mentioned. MICHAEL J. STARK,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my WM. 0. STARK.
