UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
SIDNEY O. BIGNEY, OF PROVIDENCE, Rl'IODE ISLAND.
WATCH-CHAIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,092, dated September 12, 1899.
Application filed May 24, 1899.
To ali/ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY O. BIGNEY, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVatch- Chains; and I do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the construction and arrangement of chains made for the purpose of attaching a watch to the person and to enable one to take the watch out when required with safety.
It is fully explained and illustrated in this specification and the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is arepresentation of the combined chain attached to a Watch. Fig. 2 shows the mode of wearing the chain when the watch is carried in the vest-pocket. Fig. 3 shows how the chain is worn when the watch is carried in the fob in the trousers.
The object of the invention is to produce a combination-chain that shall give perfect security against dropping the watch in taking it from the fob or pocket, and also against its being stolen from the person.
In Fig. 1, a is the watch, to which one-end of a short stout chain 1) is attached by means of a swivel-hook d in the usual way. To the other end of the chain 5 from that to which the watch is attached and about one-quarter of the distance between the watch and the bar 9 a pendent fob-chain h, with a seal or charm c, is connected, and a guard-chain n has one end also fastened to the same end of the short chain b, and its other end is provided with the usual bar g, by which it is held to a buttonhole in the vest or trousers.
In Fig. 2 is shown the way of wearing the semi No. 715,054. (No model.)
combined chain when the watch is carriedin the vest-pocket, which is here shown as being the pocket on the right side because of its being handier to draw the watch out of that pocket when a fob-chain is used and because the bar 5 on the guard-chain W in the buttonhole of the vest does not tend to unbutton the vest orstrain the fastening of the button when the watch is suddenly pulled out of the pocket.
In Fig. 3 the watch is shown as being worn in the fob in the trousers, and the bar g on the end of the guard-chain n is put through the top buttonhole in the trousers-front. When the Watch is carried in this way, the vest covers the guard-chain n and gives great security against the watch being jerked out of the i'ob bya pickpocket in a crowd, which the ordinary fob-chain does not do, and in both ways of carrying the watch the guardchain prevents it from being dropped on the floor or ground, if, by chance, the chain slips from the fingers in taking it from the fob 0r pocket.
Having thus described my improvements, I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent The chains "n and b united at their inner ends, and the fob-chain h attached at its upper end to the inner end of the chain 1), and which fob-chain is placed about one-quarter of the distance between the watch, and the bar forming the outer end of the chain 01, said fob-chain serving as a means to lift the watch from the pocket, and as a guard-chain to prevent the watch from being dropped, or from being picked from the pocket, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of May, A. D. 1899.
SIDNEY 0. BIGNEY.
In presence of BENJ. ARNOLD, M. E. CLEVELAND.
