,Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. SHALER,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Waupun, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Detachable Umbrella-Cover, of which the following is a specification. 1

My invention relates to detachablevum brella-covers, and particularly to a clasp for securing the cover to the ribs of an umbrellaframe; and the object in view is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient clasp adapted for arrangement wholly within the periph-v eral contour of the umbrella-coverand of such a construction as to expose the terminals of the ribs, whereby the appearance presented is the same as that when the cover is attached in accordance with the ordinary practice.

Further objects of the invention are to provide such a construction of clasp as to prevent the turning thereof upon the rib, adapted to be applied to a rib of the ordinary construction having the usual thread-eye, and also to provide means for limiting the inward movement of the clasp upon the rib Without modifying the construction of the ordinary umbrella-frame, whereby the cover-securing devices embodying my invention may be ap;

plied to an umbrella cover and frame without the exercise of any particular skill upon the part of the workman, or, in other words, whereby the device embodying my invention may be applied to an umbrella by the user without the aid of skilled labor.

Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of an umbrella having cover-attachin g devices constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of an improved cover-attaching device applied in the operative position to a rib, the cover being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the stop-link operatively,engagedwith the thread-eye of the rib.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

1 designates an ordinary rib of an umbrellaframe provided with the usual thread-eye 2, and 3 represents a sleeve open at both ends and forming one memberof the clasp embody- .ing my invention, said sleeeve being adapted to: be fitted longitudinally upon the rib and moved inwardly thereon a sufficient distance to expose the extremity of the rib beyond the end thereof, whereby the appearance of that portion of the rib which projects beyond the umbrella-cover 3 is the same as in the ordinary practice. The umbrella-cover is attached to the sleeve member of theimproved clasp by means of threads 4, engaging thread openings or perforations 5, formed in the.

sleeve contiguous to its outer end, the said sleeve being arranged wholly within the peripheral contour of the umbrella-cover, as clearly shown in the drawings, in order to conceal the sleeve.

In order to prevent the sleeve from turning upon the rib, it is provided at its inner side with a longitudinal upstruck groove 6, which receives the thread-eye 2 as the sleeve is fitted to place, and in order to prevent inward displacement of the sleeve upon the rib in case of looseness I employ a stop-link 7, provided at its inner end with an integral inwardly-turned stop-loop 8 and constructed at its outer end to form a snap-hook 9 for engagement with. the thread-eye 2. This stoplink is preferably constructed of a single blank of wire doubled upon itself at an intermediate point and having its sides bent at right angles to the loop to form the said stop 8, while the arms or sides of the loop are extended, the one to form a hook for engagement with the eye 2 and the other to form a spring-tongue 10, by which the hook is normally closed, but which is so located as to facilitate the engagement of the hook with the eye 2 when the attachment is applied to an umbrella-frame.

The length of the stop-link is such that when its hook end is engaged with the threadeye its stop end is arranged approximately at an interval froni the eye which is slightly less than thelength of the sleeve, and the inner end of the sleeve is cut away or notched,

The appearance of an umbrella-frame to which the cover is attached by the means hereinbefore described is substantially similar tothat of an umbrella wherein the cover is stitched to the threadeyes in the ordinary Way, and it will be obmy invention an umbrella-cover may be attached to a frame without the exercise of skill upon the part of the workman for the reason that the snap-hooks of the stop-links may be readily engaged with the thread-eyes 2, and after stitching the cover at the proper intervals to the sleeves the latter may be slipped endwise' upon the ribs until the inward movement is checked by the stops at the inner ends of said links.

A further advantage of the construction described resides in the fact that the attachment of the cover to the sleeves is at the extreme edge of the former. and in alinement with the seams between the gores, and hence when the umbrella is raised the coveris strained parallel with its peripheral edge and also upon the lines of the gore-seams, as in the ordinary practice.

A further important feature of the construction, embodying my invention resides in the fact that the, sleeve is split longitudinally and is constructed of elastic or spring metal whereby it is normally held with the edges of its'split or open side in contact; but in applying the sleeves to the umbrella-ribs the sleeves are adapted to yield transversely, or, in other words, to expand, to receive ribs of different diameters or thicknesses Without straini-ngthe parts or detractingfrom the facility with which the operation may be performed.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted towithout departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having described my invention, claim is 1. A clasp for securing an umbrella-cover what I to. a frame-rib, the same comprising an openended sleeve, to slidingly receive the umbrella frame-rib and the thread-eye thereof, and a disconnected stop, engaged with the threadeye, to limit the inward movement of the sleeve upon the rib, substantially as specified.

2. A clasp for securing an umbrella-cover to a frame-rib, havinga sleeve to receive the 1 outer end of a rib, and provided with a longitudinal groove to engage the thread-eye of the rib, and means for limiting the inward movement of the sleeve upon the rib, substantially as specified.

3. A clasp for securing an umbrella-cover to a frame-rib having a sleeve to fit upon the outer end of a rib, and having an open outer end through which the extremity of the-rib projects, and a stop for limiting the inward movement of the sleeve, said stop consisting of a link, struck from a single blank of wire, doubled upon itself at its center and upset to form a stop-loop, and having its sides constructed, respectively, to form a hook and a yielding tongue for closing the mouth of the hook, substantially as specified.

4:. A clasp for securing an umbrella-cover to a frame-rib, having a sleeve to fit upon the outer end of a rib, and having an open outer end through which the extremity of the rib projects, and a stop for limiting theinward movement of thesleeve, said stop consisting of a link engaged at one end with the threadeye of the rib, and provided-at the other end with a projection to-engage the innerend of the sleeve, substantially as specified.

5. A clasp for securing an umbrella-cover to a frame-rib, the same comprising a transversely-expansible resilient sleeve adapted to be secured to the umbrella-cover and receiving-therein the end of the rib, and a separate stop engaged at one end with the rib'and provided at its other end with a projection engaging with the sleeve to arrest the inward movement thereof upon the rib, substantially as set forth.
