UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR H. ALGER, CF BROOKTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNQR TO FRANK T. KENAH, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,379, dated July 4, 1899.
Application filed October 6, 1897. Serial No. 654,304. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern;
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. ALGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes, and is designed to reinforce and strengthen the ordinary paper boxes used for shoes and many other articles of manufacture. As is well known, these boxes are used in great numbers and are necessarily cheaply made, being generally composed of pasteboard, with a covering strip or strips passed around the sides and ends to hold the pasteboard in place, and the result is that very light pressure will cause the corners to split and make the further use of the box undesirable.
It is the object of my invention to reinforce this class of boxes by the use of a binding-string passed around the box, so as to hold the sides and ends together and offer resistance to the easy rupture of the corner.
In Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings I show the invention as applied to a box and a cover; and in Fig. 2 I show a section through part of the box, showing the application of the cord thereto.
While I have shown the invention in the form of a single cord around the upper end of a box of a certain form, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to any particularform of box, and it will also be understood that instead of having the cord at the top of the box only a second cord may be used at the center if the box should be used for a purpose requiring additional strength.
I prefer to apply the string or cordat the same time that the box is covered, as this cheapens the cost of application and in a very simple manner enables the operator to place the cord under the covering, thus retaining it in place and concealing it.
The figures show the cord at aand the cov- 5 ering at b, the pasteboard sides being shown at c and the ends at d. The cord is applied to the cover of the box in the same manner.
What I claim is- 1. A pasteboard box comprising the box and the paper covering therefor with a reinforcing-cord extending entirely around the box and held between the said box and the paper covering which is pasted thereto, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the pasteboard box having a covering-paper pasted thereon with strengthening-cord concealed between said covering-paper and the pasteboard sides of the box and extending entirely around the box and a box-cover adapted to fit over the concealed cord, substantially as described.
3. In combination with the box having a paper covering pasted thereto with the cord concealed between said paper covering and the box and extending entirely around the box and a box-cover having a paper covering with a cord extending around the same and between the paper covering and the sides of the cover, the said cover fitting over the concealed strengthening-cord of the box, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR H. ALGER. Witnesses:
