IMPROVEMENT IN WOODEN BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,280, dated June 25, 1878; application zliled December 9, 1875.
sisting in the combination of such a box with binding-strips of bent metal arranged to clasp and cover substantially the entire upper edge of those sides or ends of the box which are formed from the end of the veneer and liable to split, the object being to bind the ends and flaps together, and to prevent splitting, and to impart lateral rigidity to the box, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a blank from which a box or receptacle embodying my invention is made. Fig. 2 is an end view of the box when finished. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the box. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 5 is a plan of the same.
In carrying out my invention, I take a woodveneer and out it out to the form of the blank seen in Fig. 1, the same being square or elon- This blank-A is checked or grooved at a a b b to form the bends and angles of the box, and slitted at o c to separate the sides and ends from each other. For
the sake of distinction I will designate C O the sides and D D the ends of the box, the grain of the blank running lengthwise of the sides and crosswise of the ends, the checks 0, a being out across the grain. The sides are prolonged to form flaps B B, which overlap the ends when the sides and ends are bent up to form the box. These flaps are cemented wise finished; but I prefer to apply them after the sides have been secured to each other.
Having thus described my invention, 1 wish it understood that I do not claim, broadly, bindings for boxes of all kinds, as these have been used; nor do I claim a box made from veneer of the general form and character herein shown, as these have been long in' use and are not new with me; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a veneer box, having its sides prolonged to form flaps lapping over upon its end, of a bent metal strip, covering substantially the entire upper edge of the end, and securing the end to the flaps, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
