lie it known that I, Samoan A. Gonnnnau, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in New York, in the borough of Queens, county of Queens, and State of New York, have in vented certain no and useful improvements in Covers for :lackingBoxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to ren'iovable covers for pasteboard packing boxes .in which the edges are reinforcta'l against breakage by the tying cords usually employed in such boxes.

The object of the invention is to provide a cover of this character which is simple in construction, economical in material and effective for the purpose.

Referring to the drawings, a web 10 of cardbtmrd or pasteboard or similar and suitable material, and of any suitable shape such as is usual in packing boxes, engages grooves 1.1 of a frame 12 of wood or similar and suitable material, which frame completely surrounds the web. The frame consists of side-members 13 which are joined at their ends in any suitable manner, as by nails for instance, so as to form with the web a compact and single structure. To avoid any shearing action and to intensify the compactness of the structure and add further resistance to strains exteriorly applied, as also to improve the. finish of the cover, a covering 1-1 of cloth or similar and suitable material is cemented to the outside of the frame. This covering extends inward over the top of the frame and downward on the inner face of the frame above the holding groove 11 therein, being cemented to said top and inner face, and is provided with a horizontal extension 18 which is cemented to the upper face of the web 10 adjacent to that portion thereof which enters said holding groove, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The strip extends completely around these parts of the frame and web and thereby covers the 't'astening means of the side-members of the frame and cooperates with the frame and web so as to make a compact structure of finished appearance. The strip 14; is caused to adhere closely to the frame and web and its coaction with the frame and web serves to securely hold the frame to the web, preventing any shearing action, and by the cooperation of the web, frame and strip brings about a concrete and solid cover which serves to effectively resist the strains to which covers for boxes are usually subjected.

The invention thus set forth, which consists of the cooperating web, frame and strip, may be readily made as described by the assembling of the web, the grooved frame and the uniting strip, and the cover may be made at comparatively small expense and manufactured in a simple manner. And the mode of using my invention is by applying a cover as described to a member 15, as shown in Fig. 5, which is made of cardboard or similar material and forms the main portion of the packing box. The cover, depending on the position of the same in relation to the box, will be either a top or bottom cover.

A modified form of my invention is shown in Fig. 3, wherein the frame is beveled, as shown at 16, the strip uniting the frame and web adhering closely to the frame and web and by the beveled portion gradually extending toward the web so as to bring about a uniform distribution of stress.

Another modified form of my invention is shown in Fig. 4, where the strip extends, in addition to the manner as before described, horizontally under the bottom and upwardly over the frame and inwardly under the web 10 by an extension 19, being cemented to these parts, and to the web, covering thereby a substantial portion of the upper and lower surface of the web, so as to bring about a very secure assembling and close cooperation of the web, frame and strip.

I do not wish to be understood to limit myself to the embodiments shown, since changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and underlying principle of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A removable cover for a packing boX consisting of a frame of stifi material provided with a holding groove around the inner face of its sidewall below its top edge, a web of light breakable material surrounded by said frame and having its edge projecting into the groove thereof and a covering of flexible material cemented to the outer face and top of said frame and to the inner face thereof above said web and having a horizontal extension cemented to the top of said web adjacent to the holding groove of said frame.

2. A cover for packing boxes consisting of a web, a frame of relatively stiff material surrounding said web and provided with an interior groove receiving the Web, and a strip covering the frame and covering a substantial portion of the upper and lower sides of the web immediately adjacent the groove of the frame, so as to hold the parts together.
