BOX. AND .BLANK THEBEFOR.
specification 0f Leners einem;
Patentes fr?, solo."
Application sied nach is, 191e. serial No. 15,163.
T0 all 107mm 'it may concern f Bc it known that I, ELLoN S. HILL a citizen of the United States, and resiclent of lBoston, in the county of Suffolk and State of lllassacliusetts, bave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes and] Blanks Tberefor, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to boxes made from paper board or .so-called box-board. and the object of the il'xv'ention is to produce cheap and strong box members or blanlrs wi th reinforcing material, Wherever strengthening or reinforcing is required.
To this end the invention consists in the improvements in a box member and a blank therefor y substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.-
In tlie process of making or setting up of boxes it has been usual and necessary, ben cause of the Weakness of tlie box-board, to reinforce some or all of the corners or angles of the boxes. After the setting up and reinforcing-has been completed the box and lid are usually covered on the outside with a thin, surfaced or highly finished paper, to give them a better appearance.
l/lbile the box or receiving member does 'net so frequently require this strengthening as the coveror licl therefor, l flo not limit my invention to either member oir' the box, or to- 40 or around the corners or angles of' thebox after it has been formed or sliepen, or (lun ing tbe process of forming or settingiup. lhe placing of these on tbe box'meinbers involves considerable expense and dillb culty whether :lone by band or machinery, flue to the necessity oit' making the stays positively adhere and also at the same time exactly locating them at the place of greatest strain or pressure.
ln carrying out my invention l provide a flat blank having longitudinal creases near two opposite edges (leuning the bases of tv/o longitudinal flanges and slots at the opposite ends of said oreasesdeining the inner edges of reinforcing tongues and the ends ot two lateral flanges, the blank being also creased to define the bases of saifl lateral g flanges, the longitudinalriianges anni tongues.
being provided with reinforcing strips con. neeting said flanges Witbthe tongues. "1in forming a box from said blank tbe flanges are bent inwarilly from tbe bottoni. portion of tbe blank and tbe tongues are bent to lie' against the inner sides of tlie lateral iangea Preferably each liange is of greater Width" tio than the said tongues, and creaserl longituf `tlinally to cleiine the bases of flaps which are bent inwardly to cover saisi, tongues and reinforcing strips, the said flanges and strips forming in the conipleted bex a laminated, Wall.
0f the accompanying cirawings orninga part of 'this specification: Figure 1 re are sente a -plan view of blank embodying my. invention; Figs. 2, 3 and l represent frag mentaryj perspective views illustrating su@ cessive steps in the operation of forming the box; Fig. 5 represents a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4l; Fig. 6 represents a section on line 6-6 of Fig. L
The saine reference characters inclinato 'tlie saine or similar "parts in all tbe views.
a body portion l2, two longir olinal 13, and 'two lateral flanges le, said blank and" flanges being .integral ancl' made from boro' board or other suitable material. The blanlriL 1 The blank representeai by 1 comprises is provided with longitudinal creases 15 de lining the bases of the anges 13 anfl with i lateral creases 16 defining the bases of tbe gli flanges 14. The blank is refill-.eel at appt site ends with slots 1? de ning the ends of i the lateral flanges4 14C and 'tbe inner edges of reinforce@ tongues 18 which constitute en' tensions of the longitudinal flanges '13. To the flanges 18 and tongues '18 are cernenterl reinforcing strips 19, preferably or a relav tively thin paper of superior textile strength, such as the so-callecl Kraft paper, or of clotlu,l saidv strips extending across the lines on Wliicllthe tongues 18 are bent, as hereinafter described, said lines being continuationsI of the creases 16. A'llhe flanges are widened and are longituinally creased sit/20 to define' the bases of flaps 13a on the anges 13, and flaps 14: on the llangesA 14.-' g
'In forming a box member from the de scribed blank the longitudinal flanges 13 are bent from the` body portion 12, an@` the tongues 18 are bent inwardly, as indicated by Fig. 2. The lateral flanges 1li are then bent against the tongues 18, as indicated by loo l The last described operation coniplees the box member, which is composed o .e body portion and a rectangular laminated. Wall,
ee clearly shown by Figs. fl, 5 anoL 6, the corner portions of said Wall haring a greater number of layers than the intermediate nortions. il; will be seen that the corners efL the box, member wall are reinforced by the reinforcing strips 19,-said strips being; supn ported in part by theongnes 18.
l use the terms longitudinal and laeral for 'the sake of convenience of description, and not; to indicate that the longitudinal flanges are necessarily longer than the lateral langes.
Having described my invention, l claim:
A box member composed ci a bla-nl; having longitudinal ereeses near two opposite edges defining the bases .of tivo longiudinei flanges and slots at the opposite ends el: said creases defining the inner edges of reinforcing ongues and, the enfle of @we flanges5 the blank being also creased; e oe fine the bases of said lateral iienges, the flanges being bene at right angles wid. body pei-tion te form a rectangular said tongues being bent o overlap elle portions of the lateral flanges, and the le tudinel flanges and tongues being provi, vwith reinforcing strips cemented to ii sides of the said flanges nucl tongues ait: tending across the corners of said wall, flange being widened, and centrally er longitudinally to define the bases of gs, which are of ,substantially the saine wie:L as the flanges 'and are bene inwardly no cover and conceal saicl tongues and reinforcing Strips, and the inner sides'of the flanges, the said flanges, strips, onglies, and flaps being cemented together and forming a lanlinaxeil Wall the corners of which are reinforced by both the said tongues and the said .sbrine ln testimony lwhereof I hexe my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
