FRUIT-PACKING BOX.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, ALFRED L. VooDILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Packing Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to produce a fruit packing box of light and durable material which shall take up less room than the standard packing box now in use and which can be constructed at a less cost than the standard packing box. I accomplish this object by the acking box described herein and illustrate( in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1.- is a perspective view of my improved acking box with a portion in one side bro ren away for clearness of illustration. Fig. 2.- is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved packing box on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. In constructing my improved packing box the main portion of the sides, the ends, the top and the bottom are constructed of straw board or cardboard having perforations 3 therein for ventilation. The edges of the bottom 4 are turned upwardly to form attaching flanges 5, to which iianges the sides and ends are secured in any suitable manner, preferably by sewing the same on a machine. V-shaped metallic corner strips 6 are secured at the. meeting edges of the sides and ends. These corner strips are secured preferably by stitching or stapling, and have the ends thereof turned inwardly beneath the bottom as best shown in Fig. 2, and the inturned ends are preferably secured together and to the bottom by rivets 7. At the top of the corner strips on the side thereof which projects over the end there is an extension strip which is first bent outwardly and then parallel to the end piece and then inwardly and along the end to which it is secured, preferably by rivets 8, which ears with the end form sockets 9, through which the longitudinal binder strips 10 pass downwardly therethrough and are then bent upwardly to lock them in place in the socket to hold the cover 11 in place on the box. Through the center of the box is the usual division strip 15, which is secured to the V-shaped metallic angle strips 16, which angle stri )s are also secured to the side of the box. prefer to haveone of the angle strips extend -from the top to the bottom as shown in Fig. 2, and the other angle strip on the other side of the partition to extend downwardly only a short distance, as thereby I effect a saving in matcrial, but if desired the short strip could be omitted altogether by packing in that end of the box first.

All of the metallic portions may be constructed of light material and by the use of cardboard in connection therewith a packing box is formed that possesses the requisite strength and at the same time is much lighter than the standard box and can be constructed at less cost and takes up less space when packed in a car for shipping.

IIaving described my invention, what I claim is:

A fruit packing box composed of perforated card-board reinforced at the corners by metallic corner strips turned under and secured to the bottom; a card-board partition within said box between the ends thereof; metallic angle strips secured to each side of said partition said strips being secured to opposite sides of said box respectively; metallic holding ears secured to the ends and sides of said box near the top thereof and longitudinal and transverse detachable flat metallic binding strips passingA over the cover of the box and around said holding 1e)ars, whereby the cover is secured upon the In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 23rd day of November, 1906.
