IMPROVEMENT IN RETAINERS FOR NECK-TIES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, J. C. MERRITT, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Device for Retaining a Neck-Tie or Scarf to a Persons Collar; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of his specification.

My invention consist-sin a metallic plate or frame of novel construction, as will be hereinafter described, for retaining or confining the neck-tie or scarf to a persons collar, so that the same may be folded, tied, or arranged in various ways to suit the fashion of different seasons. In the accompanying drawing-'- Figure 1 is a front view of a scarf attached in one wayby my improved device.

Figure 2 is a back view of the same.

Figure 3 is a front view of the device, showing the manner in which the ribbon or scarf is first attached to the device.

Figure 4-. is a back view of the device, and a view also of the elastic band and ring employed for fastening the device to the collar.

The device, when completed, resembles a frame which can be readily stamped (many at a time) out of fiat sheets of metal or other suitable material. A A are the two rings or sides of the frame, each carrying or having formed in it a large slot or opening, a, fig. 3, through which the material to be used for the scarf or neck-tic is drawn previously to folding it in the desired style. The top of the plate, in the present instance, is cut in somewhat of a V-shape, which insures lightness, and permits of the corners or points 6 of the rings A being pushed under the fold of the collar to conceal them, as well as to partially secure the device in place. At the lower part of the plate an aperture, 0, is made, through which is hung an elastic band, d, carrying aring, e, at its end. The said ring 6 is pressed together at one side, so as to form a contracted part or loop, g, which, after the button on the band of the shirt is thrust through its larger part, will clasp the stitches receiving the button to the shirt-band, and thus keep its position on the button, and therefore hold the device in proper position to the collar. The band 0? may be fastened in various ways to the plate or frame; I have shown it as clasped by a lip, F, turned up from one side of the aperture 0.

In using my device, the material employed for the scarf or neck-tie is run through the'slots a a, as shown in fig. 3, (the frontof the frame being in this figure toward the observer;) the ends are then folded down across each other in theusual way, and a scarf-pin may be used if desired, or the ends may be run through a ring, as shown in fig. 1, and in this latter case the elastic band OZ may be carried around the ring, and thence up through the aperture 0, as shown clearly in fig. 2. The material to form the scarf or neck-tie may be arranged upon the device in various other ways. The device is secured in position by placing the corners a a of the wings under the fold of the collar, and to placing the ring e upon the button, as before described. If the device be used with a choker or stand-up collar, it would be well to so arrange the scarf as to cover the corners of the wings, which can be easily done. I am aware that devices of metal and other substances have bcen used for confining scarfs and neck-ties to the collar, and I do not therefore claim any such device broadly. I however know of none constructed like mine, nor have I seen any upon which the neck-tie or scarf can be applied in 'so many different ways as with mine.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A retainer for neck-ties provided with openings at a for the reception of the neck-tie and having an elastic connection secured to the retainer by means of lip F, and provided with the button attachment eg, substantially as described.
