Be it known that I, THOMAS F. DUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston, V

in the county of Suffolk and State of Massaohusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neckties, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of neckt ies which extend around the neck and hang down in front, and especially to the style of necktie commonly termed a four-in-hand; and the invention relates specifically to a combination, with a four-in-hand tie, of a detachable band of the character and construction below described.

WVith many persons tying a four-in-hand is somewhat difficult and occupies considerable time to learn and practice. Moreover, the process of tying necessitates twisting, folding, and wrinkling the material, especially when the knot is drawn tight and comparatively small, as is somewhat the mode at present, a small knot being practicallyneces- 'sary when a high turned-down collar is worn. The wrinkling of the tie necessitates frequent ironing, and the constant tying causes the article soon to become worn, and when the color is delicate daily handling in tying and untying quickly soils it. It is also found in practice that in case the fabric of which the tie is constructed has distinct figuressuch as a flower, for exampleit is difficult to so arrange the tie that the figure will appear centrally in the cross-fold. This difficulty practically prevents the working or stamping upon four-in-hand ties of monograms, society, and other symbols, to. It is also apparent that an ornamental scarf-pin if worn must be removed every time the knot is untied.

In this improvement I provide an attachable and detachable band so constructed that the ends of the four-in-hand tie may be allowed to hang freely down from the throat without tying or knotting or even folding, and the band is applied in such a manner that it cannot fall or slip, said band presenting the general appearance of the cross-fold in a fourin-hand tie.

The nature of my invention is fully described in detail below and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of my four-in-hand tie in positionfor use. Fig. 2 is a front view of the band removed and spread apart. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 4 is a top view of the band removed and closed. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line X, Fig. 3.

A represents an ordinary four-in-hand tie 6: or scarf.

My attachable and detachable band comprises a base B, of starched or stiffened fabric or other flexible or elastic material, an outer covering 0, corresponding to a greater or less degree with the fabric of the tie itself, said portion 0 overlapping the rear side of the base A at O, and a cheap lining D, applied to the rear or inner surface of the band. The side edges of the band are flaring, so that the top of the band is wider than the bottom, and secured to the rear or inner side next said edges are strips of metal E and F, each of which is secured in position byits upper and lower ends overlapping at e the upper and lower edges of the band and its central portions being provided with a pointed projection 6, which extends through the band and clenches on the inner side. The projections e and lips e are not, however, in sight, as they are not only on the inner surface of the band,

'but on the rear side thereof behind the tie when the band has been placed in position. The strip of metal E is formed with the substantially rectangular extension or plate 11, provided with a plurality of vertical slots H, said plate or extension being formed at its upper and lower edges with serrations or teeth J J. The strip F is centrally provided with the rearwardly extending or overlapping 9o catch F. The teeth J J project inward at such a downward angle that the clasping of the band presses them into the body of the tie, preventing the band from sliding downward, but allowing it to be slid upward.

The taper of the band may be variedas desired, and as many slots H can be provided as are deemed necessary, so that the band may present the appearance of a smaller or larger knot, as is desired by the wearer.

It is evident that by the use-of this band wrinkling is prevented, so that the shape and fresh appearance of the tie are retained for a considerable time, and as there is no knotting to shorten the tie when in use less material ing different monograms or symbols, such as are used by college students and in political I campaigns, may be applied to the same tie.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is+

1. In combination with a necktie ot the character described, an attachable and dcof clasping said ends whereby it may be prevented from dropping out of such position, substantially as described.

2. In combination with a necktie of the character described, an attachable and de- Difiterent bands havand to be removed from the tie by unclaspin g said ends, openingout the band and withdrawing it laterally from the tie metallic strips secured to the opposite ends of the band substantially parallel with said ends; clasping devices extending outward from said strips for engagement with each other when the band is closed; and means for engaging the band by the act of clasping its ends whereby it is prevented from dropping out of its position around the tie, substantially as set forth.

3. In combination with a necktie of the character described, the band comprising a base of relatively stiff material and a covering of ornamental material; the strips E, F secured to the opposite edges of the band; the slotted extension H, 11 provided with the teeth J, J and extending from the strip E beyond the edge of the band; and the hook F extending from the strip F and adapted to engage the extension II by means of one of its slots H, substantially as described.
