ATTOHA/Emn W/T/VESSES du@ el THOMAS B. SEERY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STEAVIER-TRUNK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,37 5, dated March 21, 1899. Application filed July 23,1898. Serial No. 686,675. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. SEERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steamer-Trunks, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to steamer-trunks; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is adapted to be opened from the side, so as to facilitate the use of receptacles of this class on board a ship.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following'speciiication, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a steamertrunk made according to my invention, the front thereof being partially open; Fig. 2, a cross-section thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section thereof, showing in detail the pivoted catch for extending the upper hinged section; and Figaeis a view of a section through the line 3 3 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow and showing the upper hinged section extended by the pivoted catch.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide -a steamertruuk 5, which is of the usual form and one side of which is open, as shown at 6, and provided with hinged side sections 7 and S.
The entire trunk is preferably covered with leather, heavy canvas, or similar material, as shown, and at the front or open side thereof this covering is extended over the hinged front or side sections 7 and 8, and said covering constitutes the hinges for said sections.
The lower hinged section 7 is preferably much Wider than the upper hinged section, and said sections are adapted to be held together by a suitable lock 9.
The upper hinged section 8 is provided on its inner side with a pivoted catch 10, the end of which is shown in full lines in Fig. 2, and said catch is shown in the operative position in dotted lines in said figure, being fully illustrated in Figs. 3 and '4. The catch 10 When the section Sis extended maybe turned to engage the body 5 of the trunk and hold said section 8 in extended position. The hinged section 8 is also provided at its edge With a strip 11, which overlaps the joint between the two hinged sections 7 and 8, and t-he trunk is provided with a plurality of drawers 12, three of which are shown in the drawings.
The said trunk is also provided with end handles 13, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
In order to lock the trunk, the drawers 12 are pushed in, as shown in Fig. 2, and the hinged sections 7 and S are folded up into the position shown in full lines in said 1i gure, Where they are held by the lock 9. The pivoted catch 10, which is connected with the upper hinged section 8, is intended to hold said upper section in a horizontal position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and either or all of the drawers may be pulled out, as Will be readily understood, when the said hinged sections 7 and 8 are in the position shown in dotted lines in said figure.
My improved steamer-trunk is simple in construction and operation and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A steamer-trunk, one side of which is provided With an upper and lower hinged section and having a pivoted catch secured to said upper section whereby it may be heldin au extended position with relation to the trunk, a look secured to said sections wheremy invention I have signed mynmne, in presby they may be fastened together, a pluence oft-hesubsoribing Witnesses, this 22d day rnlity of drawers arranged on cleats in said of July, 1898.
trunk and a thick iexibie covering inoasing THOMAS B. SEERY. 5 said trunk and furnishing hinges for said sec- Witnesses:
tions, substantially as shown and described. A. C. MCLOUGHLIN,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as F.. A. STEWART.
