To a whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM HUT'roN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention consists in what is herein shown, described and claimed; its object being to simplify and cheapen the construction of trunks having upper front drop-sections, to insure exclusion of Weather ,from the trunks and brace the ends of same when closed, enhance their durability and improve their general appearance.

Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a perspective view of a closed trunk embodying my improvements, the same being partly broken away Fig. 2, a transverse section of an open tray-lift trunk having an upper front drop section shown in closed position, and Fig. 3, a plan view of the same having the top and lift-tray thereof removed and another tray therein partly broken away.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates the body of a trunk having an upper front drop-section B connected by hinges O with the remainder of the front. In practice the lower leaves of the hinges will be concealed by the canvas or other covering of the trunk, not shown, and the disposition of such hinges is such as to be under straps that may be employed, as is common in the art, in connection with said trunk to bind the lid D of same in closed position.

A lift-tray E is shown in lever-and-link connection with the trunk-body and lid, but the same is no part of my invention although my improvements relate particularly to the upper front drop sections of the tray-lift trunks. Supported on endcleats F within. the trunk is a removable tray G to which access is facilitated when the lid D is lifted and the front 'drop section B of the trunk-body swung down. The disposition of the remov able tray G is such that it may be drawn out and pushed in on the supporting-oleats F when the aforesaid front drop-section of the trunk-body is swung down.

The upper leaves of the hinges of the dropsection B of the trunk body are covered by an outer partly depending lengthwise cleat- H that laps the parting between said dropsection and the remainder of the trunkfront, when the former is swung up into vertical position, said cleat serving the function of a valance and excluding weather -'from the trunk. I The drop-section aforesaid is pro vided with aninner upper lengthwise cleat I that braces the ends of the trunk when said dropsection is in its vertical position on the upper edge of the remainder of the front of said trunk.

Made fast to each end of the lower outer cleat H of the drop-section B of the trunkfront. is a right-angle corner-shield J of sheetmetal that laps the adjacent end of the trunk when said drop section is in vertical position, this corner-shield being of a length equal to the full width of said drop-section and serving as a weather-excluder and end-brace. It

is preferable to provide each corner-piece with a keeper K for the spring-controlled swinghasp L of a fastener common in the trunk trade, the hasp-member of the fastener be- In miter-joint with each end of the lower outer cleat H of the front drop-section B of the trunk-body is an end-cleat section M outside the adjacent corner shield J, and this end-cleat section has bevel fit upon another end-cleat section N when said drop-section of. the trunk-body is in vertical position, the

two end cleat sections simulating a continu- *ous cleat when lapped one upon the other.

Corner-bumpers P are fastened on the matching ends of the lower outer cleat H and end-cleat sections M of the front drop-section B of the trunk to better protect said dr0p-section against damage in the handling of said trunk, said corner irons or bumpers being similar to those ordinarily employed in connection with meeting outer cleats of a trunk, several of the same being herein shown.

Fasteners, similar to the one above specified, are shown employed in connection with the front drop section B and lid D of the trunk to hold said lid in closed position and relieve the usual trunk-lock from strain, such lid-fasteners being common in the art. The members Q, R, of the trunk-lock are respectively connected to the front drop-section B of the body A and lid D of the trunk.
