CANOPY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1908.
Application filed August 27. 1907. Serial No. 390.3 64.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARBARA K. APPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Whiteside an d State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canopies and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en.- able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has reference to canopies, and aims to provide a protection against mosquitoes and other annoying insects.
It is specially designed to be used in screening a cot within a tent or pavilion, but there are many other places where it can, by slight adaptation, be used to advantage.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows the frame of my device, in perspective. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the covering therefor. Fig. 3 is a plan view, showing the upper frame, in open position. Fig. 4 is a similar view with the frame closed. Fig. 5 is a side elevation, showing the frames in closed position. Fig. 6is a cross-section in theline 0c-x of Fig. 5, enlarged.
My invention consists primarily of an upperand lower frame, the upper frame comprising a pair of parallel side-pieces 1 1, united near their ends by folding braces 2 2, and the lower frame being formed of a pair of similar side-pieces 3 3, united near their ends by folding braces 4 4. The sidepieces 1 are also foldably united with the pieces 3 by means o jointed braces 5 5, attached to the outer faces of the side-pieces, near the ends thereof, by means of bolts 6, provided on their inner ends with thumbscrews 7.
Each of the braces 2 is attached to the sidepieces 1 by means of hinges 8 on the inner faces of such braces, the braces being provided at their joints with hinges 9 on their outer faces. By this means the braces are caused to fold inwardly, as shown in Fig. 4. The lower braces 4 are provided with hinges in a similar manner. To prevent accidental closing of the braces 2 and 4, when open,
each of such braces is provided with a sleeve 10, adapted to be slipped over the central joint of the hinge, and supported at one side thereof when the brace is folded.
Each of the braces 5is providedwithshoulders 11, which contact when the brace is fully opened, and prevent the same from folding outwardly.
12 represents one side of a canopy, formed of netting or other suitable material, and cor responding in shape with the hereinbefore described frame. The corners and edges of the canopy are provided with a selvage or binding 13, to protect the same against wear .at those points.
For the purposes of ingress and egress the canopy is provided in one of its sides or ends with an opening, at one side of which is a flap 14, provided with a series of buttons 15, and on the .opposite side a flap 16, having a series of snaps 17, adapted to engage the buttons 15, and hold the flaps together. By this means it is possible to close the opening from the interior of the device. The space within the frame is then perfectly protected against the entrance of mosquitoes, flies, and similar insects.
It is obvious that for the purposes of transportation or storage the device can be folded into a very compact space, as shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the covering 12 being first removed, and folded or rolled. separately.
/Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,is: i
1. In a canopy, a frame, comprising a pair of parallel side pieces 1 a pair of inwardly folding braces 2, uniting said side pieces near the ends thereof; a pair of parallel sidepieces 3; a pair of inwardly-folding braces 4, uniting said side-pieces near the ends thereof; and a plurality of inwardly folding braces 5, pivotally attached at their ends to the outer faces of the side-pieces 1 and 3, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a device of the class named, a lower pair of side-pieces 3, adapted to rest upon the ground; a pair of folding braces 4, uniting said side-pieces near their ends; an upper pair of side-pieces 1; a pair of folding braces 2 uniting the same near their ends; two pair of folding-braces 5, pivotally attached to the outer faces of the side pieces 1 and 3, near In testimonywhereof,1 affix mysignature,
the ends thereof; a catno oy- 12, adapted to in presence of two Witnesses. inclose the'frame formed by said side-pieces BARBARA K APPLE 1 and 3, when the same are opened; an opening, in the side of the canopy 12; and means Witnesses:
for closing said opening, substantially as R. W. E. MITCHELL. shown and set forth. C. E. SHELDON.
