COMBINED FOLDING BED AND TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 26, 1906.
Application filed March 6,1906. Serial No. 304,239.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH L. BOISVERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Folding Bed and Table, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a combined folding bed, table, and box, particularly adapted for the use of hunters and camping parties, where a piece of furniture is desirable which will answer the requirements of a bed or table and which can be taken down and folded to form a box capable of convenient transportation in a car, wagon, or boat.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device set up as a bed, the canopy or hood at one end being in raised position and at "the other end in lowered position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device set up as a table. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device folded as a box for storage or transportation. Fig. 4 is a detail in top plan view showing the bows which support the hood in folded position. Figs. 5 and 6 are details in section and perspective of the hinges which connect the sections.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the box is formed of two sections, each of which has two sides 6, a top or bottom 7, and fixed end pieces 8 at one end. These sections are hinged together by hinges 9, each of which consists of two pairs of plates having a connecting-pintle 10 at one corner, and these plates swing between each other when the inges are opened, as shown in Fig. 6, so that a pin 11 may be inserted through holes provided for that purpose in the plate to prevent the sections from buckling or folding when the parts are set up as a bed, as shown in Fig. 1. pieces 8 the box-sections have removable end pieces 12, which may serve as legs for the table and bed. These pieces are rabbeted, as at 13, to fit between the hinges and to fully close the ends of the box when applied for that purpose. The top or bottom pieces 7 of the box-sections are provided with socketplates 14, one of said pieces having two pairs of plates and the other having one pair, and the end pieces 12 have at one edge thereof lugs 15, which are adapted to fit in the sock- At the end opposite the fixed ets in said plates. Said pieces also have at their ends swinging links 16, adapted to engage pins 17 to form braces in the various positions in which the parts may be set. The latch 18 serves to hold the sections of the box closed.
The hood is formed in two parts 19, each of which is supported by a pair of bows 20. These are pivoted on the inner side of the side pieces of the box-sections at the respective ends thereof, and the canvas or other fabric forming the hood is attached to the bows. Jointed braces 21 serve to hold the bows in upright position. The lower portion of the hood may be left loose to form a flap, as at 22, which can be turned up for ventilation, mosquito-netting or the like 23 being used to exclude insects. These bows and the hood will fold or collapse within the box, as shown at one end in Fig. 1. For use as a transportation-box one section is folded over upon the other and the end pieces 12 are applied to the open end and held in place by the lugs 15 and the links 16, the hood being inclosed within the box. Clothing or other articles may also be packed therein. For use as a bed the sections are opened or unfolded and the end pieces 12 are applied thereunder, as shown in Fig. 1, the lugs 15 being entered in the sockets of the plate 14, one end piece under each section. The pins 11 are inserted and the hood raised. This forms a stormproof bed and tent for sleeping purposes, one of the advantages of which is that it is raised from the ground. For use as a table the pins 11 are removed and the boxsections folded upon each other. The legpieces are then applied to the under side of one section, the bottom boards of the other section forming the table-top.
I claim 1. A combined folding bed and table, comprising two box-sections hinged together, a detachable end piece on each section, adapted to form a closure therefor, means to attach both of the end pieces to the bottom of one of the sections, to form legs for the device when used as a table, and means to attach each end piece to the bottom of one of the sections, to form legs when the device is used as a bed.
2. A combined folding bed and table, comprising two box-sections hinged together, one of the sections having two sets of sockets in the bottom thereof and the other section having one set of sockets in the bottom thereof, and a detachable end piece on each sec tion, having lugs engageable in the sockets, so that both pieces may be attached as legs 5 to the bottom of one box-section, or one piece may be attached to each section.
3. A folding bed comprising two box-sections hinged together, a pair of bows pivoted at their ends to the sides of each section, and
foldabie Within the same, and flexible fabric Id stretched over the bows.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOSEPH L. BOISVERT.
