To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WINFIELD S. CLARK, citizen of the United States, residing at Penrod in the county of Muhlenberg and tate of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Tables and Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in a combination table and cabinet and has for its primary object the provision of a device of this character which will be composed of a minimum number of parts and of simple construction.

The invention has for another object, the provision of a cabinet which will be of such construction that it may be readily converted into a table, the sides and top of the cabinet serving as the end leaves while the bottom of the cabinet serves as the center of the table top.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the above stated character in which the movable supporting legs for the end leaves of the table top may be concealed when the device is employed as a cabinet.

-With the above and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth in the specification, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure l is a perspective view of the complete device assembled for use as a cabinet and showing one pair of the extension legs withdrawn from beneath the body of the device;

Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the device as employed for use as a cabinet;

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section through the same; and

Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section.

Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates the main or corner supporting legs upon which the main or central board 2 is secured, said board 2 serving as the bottom of the cabinet or as the center of the table, according to the use of the device.

links The slotted links 5 are carried by the hinge members 3 and project into the hinge members 1 which carry'the pins 6 projecting through the slots of the links 5 as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The hinge members a are secured in the lower edges of'the lower sections 7 of the cabinet ends which rest upon the ends of said cabinet bottom 2. The upper sections 8 of the cabinet ends are hinged to the lower sections 7 and adapted to be folded against the outer faces of the same, upon the connecting hinges 9, as will be readily understood by referring to the drawings. It will also be understood that when the cabinet ends are in normal position, the guard plates 10 secured to the outer faces of the lower sections 7 thereof, project below the upper surface of the cabinet bottom 2 and thereby prevent flies or dust from entering the cabinet along these edges. It will also be understood that when the cabinet ends are to be folded and swung to their lower most positions, the slotted links 5 will permit the guard plates 10 to swing around past the ends of the cabinet bottom 2 and said cabinet ends, after the sections have been folded together, may be secured against movement by suitable straps 11 depending from the end connecting members 12 of the main or corner legs 1. The upper sections 8 of the cabinet ends also carry guard plates 10 which project above the upper edges of the same to prevent dust, flies and the like from passing to the interior of the cabinet, between the upper edges of said upper sections 8 and the sections 13 of the cabinet top.

The cabinet top is preferably formed of a pair of longitudinal sections 13, one of which carries a guard plate 14 along its inner edge and overlapping the corresponding edge of the opposite section. The sections 13 of the cabinet top are adapted to be locked in closed position by suitable bolts 15 sliding through the staples 16 carried by said sections 13. The cabinet top sections 13 are also provided with suitable handles 17 by means of which the sections may be raised, when desired, upon the cabinet sides 18, to which said sections 13 are hinged. The guard plates 19 carried by the sections 13 overlap the upper longitudinal edges of the cabinet sides 18, as shown in Fig. 1 of the dra in "Th cab ne s des 8 ar als nged, as

shown at 20 to the longitudinal edges of the cabinet bottom 2 and these hinges, as well as the'hinges for connecting the sides 18 and the top sections 13, are preferably of the same form as the hinges employed for connecting the cabinet bottom 2 and the cabinet ends.

The cabinet sides 18 are provided with lower guard plates 21 which overlap the l0ngitudinal edges of the cabinet bottom 2 and prevent dust, flies and the like from passing between said sides 18 and bottom 2. It will also be seen by referring to Fig. 1, that the end sections 7 and 8 are provided with vertical guard plates 22 which overlap the ends of the sides 18 and suitable connecting hooks 23 are mounted in offset portions 2 1 of the upper vertical guard plates 22 and engage with staples 25 carried by the sides 18 to lock the ends and sides of the cabinetand retain the same in vertical position. The upper end sections 8 are also provided with suitable ventilation openings 26 covered by perforated plates 27 to permit proper circulation of air through the cabinet.

Vi7hen it is desired to convert the device into a table, the bolts 15 are disconnected and the hooks 23 withdrawn from the staples 25. The sectional ends are then folded and permitted to swing to position beneath the cabinet bottom 2 which is to become the center of the table top. The ends are secured in position, as previously stated and the cabinet top sections 13 and sides 18 permitted to assume a horizontal position in the same plane as the cabinet bottom 2, the cabinet top sections 13 and sides 18 serving as extension leaves for the table and resting upon the pairs of extension legs 28 with drawn from beneath the cabinet bottom 2. Each extension leg is mounted on the end of a bar 28*, said bars being hinged together in pairs as at 34, each pair in turn being pivoted, as shown at 29 to the free end of a bar 30 adapted to be withdrawn through an opening 31in one of the side connecting members 32 for the main or corner legs 1.'

The bar 30 is in turn hinged to a bar 33 connected with and adapted to swing to position against the inner face of the said connecting members 32. The legs 28 of each pair hinged together as shown, may swing to position against one another, as shown in Fig. 2, when not in use. Separation of the legs of each pair 28 is limited by the pivoted connecting members 35, so that the extension legs 28 may properly support the sides 18 and top sections 13 of the cabinet when resting upon said extension legs to serve as the extension leaves of the table.

I have also provided, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, suitable fastening hooks 38 carried by the upper sections 8 of the cabinet ends and adapted to be received in the staples 39 carried by the lower sections 7 of said table ends to retain the upper sections 8 in proper position upon the lower sections 7 when assembling the parts to form the cabinet or when releasing the parts of the cabinet for the purpose of converting the device into a table.

l Vhile the preferred embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it will be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages of the same.

What is claimed, is

1. In a device of the character described a plurality of hingedly connected horizontally supported sections, longitudinal bars connected with one of the sections at its under face and provided with openings, a pair of hinged bars hinged below the said last men tioned section and normally occupying a position thereunder, leg carrying bars hingedly connected with one of each of the first named bars, a second leg carrying bar hingedly connected with each of the other leg carrying bars vertical le 's carried by the leg carrying bars, the leg carrying bars being normally supported below one of the horizontal sections, the latter bars being adapted to be moved outwardly through the openings in the longitudinal bars whereupon one of each pair of the first named hinged bars is moved to a position whereby it will contact with one longitudinal side bar, the leg carrying bars being adapted to support certain of the hinged sections when the leg carrying bars are in such position.

2. In a combined table and cabinet, a supported rigid horizontal section adapted to serve as a cabinet bottom and as one of the table sections, longitudinal bars connected with the section at its under face and at its opposite longitudinal edges and provided with openings, a plurality of hinged sections operatively connected with the horizontal section adapted to be connected together to form a cabinet, a pair of hinged bars hinged below the horizontal section and normally occupying a position thereunder, leg carrying bars hingedly connected with one of each pair of the first named bars, second leg carrying bars hingedly connected to each of the other leg carrying bars, vertical legs carried by the leg carrying bars, the leg carrying bars being normally supported below the horizontal section, the latter bars being adapted to be moved outwardly through the openings in the side bars whereby one of each pair of the first named hinged bars is moved to a position whereby it will contact with one longitudinal side bar, the leg carrying bars being adapted to support certain of the sections when the leg carrying bars are in such position.

3. A device of the class described comprising a main horizontal member, main supporting legs for said main member,vertical cabinet ends hinged to said main member and adapted to fold upon themselves and to a position below the main member, means for securing said folded cabinet ends in their lowermost positions, vertical cabinet side members hinged to said main member, a cabinet top formed of two members each pivoted to a side member and adapted to be opened outwardly with said side members in the plane of the main member, extension supporting legs hinged together in pairs beneath said main member and adapted to be withdrawn from the same and spread apart to support said side and top members, means for securing said cabinet top members in closed position, and means for connecting said cabinet ends with said cabinet side members.

5. A device of the class described comprising a main horizontal member, sectional cabinet end members hinged on said main member, unitary cabinet side members also hinged on said main member, a pair of cabinet top members each hinged on one of said cabinet side members and adapted to be opened out with said side members in the plane of the main member to form a table top, legs for supporting the main member, a pair of extension legs on each side of the main member hinged together and to a foldable connection hinged to the main member beneath the same and adapted to be drawn outwardly to support the side and top members when open, overlapping guard plates carried by said cabinet end and top members to overlie the edges of said cabinet side members, and guard plates carried by said cabinet end and side members to overlap the edges of the main member.
