Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that W6,LOUIS Bonosr and J OHN JAMBoR, subjects of the King of Hungary, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foldable Tents, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in foldable tents.

The primary object of the present invention is to provide a tent of the form sometimes known as a dog tent, and being especially adapted for army use by being formed of a foldable frame which may be readily positioned upon a wagon for transportation purposes.

A further object of the device is the provision of a serviceable tent having a foldable frame which may be arranged to consume small space when desired to transport the tent, while the same possesses great strength and serviceability.

A still further ob 'ect 1s army tent having a frame which is adapted to be compactly folded when not in use, but possesses great strength when arranged in tent form and thus being especially serviceable for army use.

With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tent frame set up for use and partially broken away. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the endbrace connections. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the frame in its partly folded position, as illustrated in Fig. 6, and with the end members outstretched. Fig. 4 is a central transverse sectional view through the complete tent. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a corner portion of the tent taken from the outside thereof. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the frame in its partly folded position, and Fig. 7 is a side view thereof completely folded.

Referring more in detail to the drawings,

The frame consists of a substantially rectangular frame 11 forming the top or ridge of the tent when the device is set up for use, while an open frame 12 is secured thereto at opposite ends of the tent having sloping top portions 13 extending in equal lengths upon opposite sides of the frame 11, the said end frames12 being pivoted as at 14 to the top or ridge frame 11, pivotal connection being had between the ridge frame and the inner ends of the end frame bars 13. The outer ends of the end frames are provided with side frames 15 which are composed of plates 16 pivoted together after the manner of a fence section and may be folded, one of the same being illustrated in Fig. 3, but being adapted to protect the opposite sides of the tent when the frame is set up for use as shown in Fig. .1. The lower sides 17 of the end frames are provided with connectors 18, to the opposite ends of which arms 19 are pivoted and are adapted to be swung outwardly forming the lower portions of the front and end framework of the tent. Retaining hooks'20 are pivoted to strengthening struts 21 of the frame 12, and are adapted to engage oppositely positioned eyes 22 in the opposite sides of the ridge frame 11. It will thus be seen that with the end frames and side frames operatively set up for use as shown in Fig. 1, the fabric covering 14 may be positioned thereover, thus forming an inclosed tent, the said covering having one or more windows 23 as desired. The sides 17 of the end frames have a hinged connection as at 17 with the side portions of the frames and are relatively shiftable'in a single direction when the frame is folded to the position shown in Fig. 7.

The tent covering is provided with eyelets 24 at the margin thereof which are adapted to be engaged by projecting pins carried upon the end members 19 and side bars 16 of the frame, whereby the covering is removably secured in its operative position upon the frame.

gaged from the eyes 22 and thereupon the end frames 12 are moved upon their pivots 14 in the same direction and toward the ridge frame 11, which will bring one of the frames 12 in a projecting position overlying outwardly of one end of the ridge frame, while the slanting bars 13 will thereby be brought in substantially the same horizontal plane as the ridge frame 11, although, the opposite end frame 12 will necessarily engage overlying the ridge frame as shown in Fig. 6. The diverging members 19 may then be swung inwardly toward each other upon their pivots, the opposite sides 15 having previously been folded, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 3. The frame members are then moved toward each other upon the

11 and 17 as shown in Fig. 7, and the frame is in its compact position for transportation purposes, while the covering 10 being removed, may be folded up as will be evident.

In the construction of the device shown, the

11 and 17 are loose or free enough to compensate for the nonalinement of the pivots and to permit the frame to be folded as indicated. It is also noted that the covering is provided with a form of closing means 26 after the form of glove-fasteners whereby the tent flaps may be readily closed.

It will be seen that one of the frame sides is provided with double length transverse links 27, while a single bar 28 extends across the said frame and is pivotally connected centrally to one side of the ridge frame 11 as at 29. The opposite side frame is provided with a short flange rib 80 which is pivotally connected as at 31 substantially centrally to the ridge frame 11. The side frame so connected to the ridge by the rib 30 may be folded partly or entirely at any time when the tent is set up and thus provide an adjustable doorway. I

- It will thus be seen that an exceedingly strong tent frame is formed which is foldable into compact arrangement and is serviceable in maintaining the fabric covering 10 in complete tent formation.

While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. a

What we claim as new is 1. A device of the class described comprising a ridge frame, end frames pivoted adjacent the opposite ends of the said ridge frame, side frames pivoted to the outer ends of the said end frames, diverging bars pivoted to the lower portions of the said end frames, a flexible covering adapted for inclosing the complete frame, and connecting means between the said frame and covering.

2. A foldable tent frame comprising a rectangular ridge frame, an end frame pivoted adjacent one end of the said ridge frame and adapted for folding into horizontal alinement therewith, an end frame pivoted to the opposite ends of the said ridge frame, foldable side frames pivoted to the outer opposite ends of the said end frames, intermediate connections between the said side frames and the central portions of the said ridge frame, end members pivoted substantially central to the lower portion of the said end frames, struts carried by the said end frames, oppositely arranged eyes carried by the said ridge frame, hooks pivotally mounted upon the said struts adapted for engaging the said eyes when the frame is set up in its operative position.

3. A tent frame comprising a foldable rectangular ridge frame consisting of opposite halves pivotally linked together, end frames foldably pivoted to the opposite halves of said ridge frame, and having sides opposite the said ridge frame pivotally attached for movement in only one direction to the adjacent side portions of the said end frames, diverging members carried by said end frame sides, and foldable side frames oppositely attached to the said end frames.

4. A tent frame comprising a foldable rectangular ridge frame consisting of opposite halves pivotally linked together, end frames foldably pivoted to the opposite halves of said ridge frame, and having sides opposite the said ridge frame pivotally at tached for movement in only one direction to the adjacent side portions of the said end frames, connectors outwardly attached to the said end sides, opposite arms pivoted to the said connectors, a freely foldable frame side pivoted to corresponding ends of the said end frames, a foldable side member at the opposite side of the device from the afore-mentioned frame side, and an angular bar attached to the said side member and pivoted at its inner end to the ridge frame.

5. A foldable tent frame comprising a foldable ridge, foldable ends pivoted to the said ridge, foldable sides pivoted at opposite points to the said ends, and an angular controlling bar pivotally connecting one of the said sides to the said ridge.
