Application filed July 17, 1915. Serial No. 40,505;
manufacture and which may be readily collapsed or folded compactly when not in use as may be found desirable.
A further object ofthe device is theprovision of a frame-work for a collapsible bag covering and adapted for closing compactly when desired and when expanded positions the covering firmly stretched 1n 1ts hand bag formation.
A still further object is to provide a' foldable hand bag frame with aflexible covering and with non-flexible lid members for closing the mouth of the bag which is contracted relatively of the point of greatest cross sectional area of the. device when operatively positioned, oppositely arranged bail carrying handles being also provided. b
With these general objects in view; and
others that will appear as the natureof the Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the preferred construction being slightly larger than that illustrated in Fig. 1 and'provided with a retaining bail and lid retainers. Fig. 8 is a central longitudinal sectional view of-the device. Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view thereof. Fig. 5 is an end 'view of the framework in its closed position. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of an end portion of the framework unfolded. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of an edge portion of the device showing a hinge member forthe lid, and Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view of one of the lid hinges. V
In" describing the drawings, like designat 111g numerals will be employed in connection with all of the views including Figs. 1 and2, as Flg. 2 includes all of the elements dis closed in Fig. 1. The device broadly consists of a metallic frame-work 10 over which a flexible covering 11, formed of such material as leather or canvas is positioned and 1s preferably secured by being lapped over thetwo part wire' rim 12 forming the .en-
trance opening of the device and as best illustrated at 13 in Figs. 4 and 7 of the drawings.
central-bottom how 1 1 is hinged to similarly shaped side bows 15'at their free ends by means of pivoting rivets 16, while spacing struts 17 are hinged together as at 18 and are pivoted at their opposite free ends to the end portions 19 of the bows 15 as at 20. The bows are positioned within the flexible covering 11 and theinner ends of the rim members 12 are pivotally n1ounted upon therivets 16, while hooks 2-1 are carried by the rim members 12 and are substantially. rectangular form when the bows 15 are outspread in. their operative positions. and with the struts 17 pressed in substantial alinement with each other and with the stop lug 23 of one of the 'said struts engagingthe upper edge of the companion strut. r
It will be noted that the bottom" portions of the'bows 15 are curved in cross section which prevents the same from piercing the flexible covering and also assists in allowing the separation of the said bows to stretch the covering in it bag formation and in contact with the centrally positioned bottom brace 1 1 as best illustrated in Fig. 4. 1
Two equal sized lid members 2 1 are hinged to the oppositerim members 12 by means of short links 25, while securing straps and buckles 26 and 27 respectively may be em ployed for retaining the said lids in their closed positions in a single plane in flat engageinent above the, rectangularly arranged rim members 12 when the device is assembled.
A handle or bail 28 is arranged transversely of the bag and removably secured to opposite hooks 29 secured at opposite points to the rim members 12, while a second shorter handle 30 is positioned longitudinally of the bag if desired, as shown in Fig. 2 being seadapted to engage within eyes 22 of the bail I 7 ends 19 for reta ning the rim members in cured to one of the lid members 24 When desired to fold or collapse the ,device, the lids 2 4 are opened and the hooks 21 released and the struts l8 folded together by. drawing the same outwardly'and Whereuponthe side bows -15 may be brought substantially together inclosing the' central bow litherebetween while the rim members'lQ as well as the lids 2% will fold flatly as best illustrated in Fig, 5, the fiexible'covering 11 readily being folded with the frame-work as the only attachment thereof with the frame-work is in connection with the rim members 12 as here mbefore specified. It Wlll be seen that to set up the JClQVlCS, a substantialreversal of the above operation accomplishes the results arid that the device will then assume its bag formation with its outwardly bowing opposite ends and the substantially rectangular rim 12 will be of lessarea than the eentral longitudinal sectional area thereoi at a point between the lids and the bag bottom.
I Whileftheiorm of the invention herein 'showneand described is what is believed to be the "preferred embodiment thereof, it is "nevertheless ftdbe.understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction without departing from the spirit and' scope of the invention asclaimed.
zspacingstruts pivoted to each other and to side bows, retaining hooks carried by the rim 60 the end portions of the said side bows, rimsections pivoted together at the pivotal conneeing hooks carried by the rim members and 5 engaging the said eyes.
2. A collapsible bag frame comprising a bottom bow having upturned end portions, side bows having upturned end portions hinged at their free ends to the free ends of so the said bottom bow end portions and having their bottom portions curved in cross section, spacing struts pivoted to each other and to the end portions of the said side bows, rnn
sections pivoted together at the pivotal con 55 nection between the end portions ofsaid bows and being substantially rectangular in form when the device is in its assembled position, eyes carried by the end portions of the said members and engaging the said eyes, equal sized lids flatly arranged upon the said rim members, hinging links connecting the said lids and the said run members, closure retaining means connecting the said lids, a
removable bail positioned transversely of the lids and secured at opposite points to the said rim members, and an auxiliary handle secured longitudinally to one of the said lids.
In testimony'whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
