Description

MARY DUPLESSIS, or New ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
SATCHEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June v4c, 1907.
Application led October 27, 1906. Serial No. 340,875.
O (1J/ whom, it Noa/y concern:
Be it known that I, MARY DUPLESSIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and-State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Satchels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand satchels or bags, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character in which the upper portion or mouth of the bag may be collapsed and folded into the latter or arranged in expanded condition, as desired, and for varying the capacity of the Satchel at will..
A further obj ect of the invention is to provide an improved frame work for the bag, one which will permit of the upper wall and mouth of the bag being conveniently expanded or collapsed, and one whereby injurious Wearing of the bag through the 0peration of expanding andv collapsing the same is obviated.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
- In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a satchel embodying the invention, and showing the mouth and upper wall thereof in collapsed condition. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2&2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the wall and mouth of the Satchel in expanded condition. Fig. 4 is a detail view, showing the manner of connecting` the portions of the framework.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the body portion of the Satchel, which is composed of leather or other suitable mate` rial, comprises side walls 1, end walls 2, and a top wall 3 formed in two sections lying, respectively, at opposite sides of the mouth 4, the Satchel, which maybe fastened in closed condition by means of a lock 5, being provided with a handle 6.
The material of which the Satchel is composed is stretched upon and to be distended by means of a horizontal frame 7 situated at the upper edges of the walls 1 and 2 and comprising a pair of portions or sections of substantially U-shape having the terminals of their end portions or arms 8 shaped 'to provide hinge leaves 9 perforated to receivev pintles 10 by means of which the frame Sections are pivotally connected for swinging movement `toward and from each other.
The mouth t of the Satchel is formed by a pair of substantially U-shaped metal frames 11 having the lower terminals of their end portions or arms 12 shaped to form hinge eaves 13 perforated to receive the pintles 10 lwhich thus serve to also pivotally connect the frames 11 for swinging movement toward and from each other, there bein arranged and terminally secured in the ang es formed at the points of meeting of the respective ame arms 8 and 12, expansible springs 14 which' tend to maintain the frames 7 in horizontal position and the frames 11 in vertical position. It is to be understood in this connection that the adjacent edges of the covering material of the bag are attached to the frames 1 1 while the frame sections 7 are properly attached to the inner faces and at the upper edges of the walls 1 and 2.
'In practice, the Sections of the upper wall 3 may be folded downward into the Satchel, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, whereupon the frame sections 7 will stand in vertical position and lie in contact with the frames 11 and the Satchel be reduced to a minimum Size, the
frames being, under these conditions, maintained in proper contracted position by means.
of fastening members or clips 15 applied as in Fig. 1. When, however, it is desired to increase the size and capacity of the Satchel, the clips 15 are removed, the mouth frames 1 1 are drawn upward, as in Fig. 3, the springs 14 at the same time expanding and carrying the frames 7 to horizontal to be particularly observed that owing to the provision of the improved form of frame herein described, the operations of collapsing or expanding the satchel may be quickly performed and that because of the frame members 7 and 11 being loosely connected through the medium of the pintles 10 a free movement of the parts is insured, thus obviating wearing of the covering material of the Satchel due to the folding and unfolding of the Same.'
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A Satchel comprising side and end walls and a top wall, the latter consisting of a pair osition for hold-v ing the Satchel in expande( condition. It isv TOO . I I l of sections, a horizontal rame arranged 1n coveringmaterialandformmgamouth forthe the satchel at the upper edges of its side and Satchel. ro end walls and comprising a pair of members, In testimony whereof, l aHiX my signature pintles connecting the meetingV ends of said in presence of two witnesses.
