IMPROVEMENT IN DUMPlNG-WAGONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,060, dated October 19, 1875; application filed September 2, 1875.

To all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. THOMP- soN, of Garlisle, in the county of Cumberland and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cart-Chutes and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My present invention is intended as an improvement upon the coal-wagon for which Letters Patent No. 165,632 were granted to me July 13,1875; and it consists, particularly, in the construction of the sectional folding chute, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a coal-cart embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detached views, showing the sliding joint in the chute. Figs. 5 and 6 are detached views, showing the folding joints thereof.

A represents the coal-cart constructed substantially as described in my former patent, above referred to, and provided with end gates B B,which are hinged to swing upward. At the rear end of the cart is a stationary spout, 0, provided under its outer end with a fender, a, for supporting the chute, which is made in four sections, D D D and D The first or upper section D slides within the second section D it being connected thereto by flanged pieces I) I), which a e attached to one section, and fit over the edge of the other section, and thus, also, form stops to prevent these two sections from being pulled apart. On the under side of the first section B, at the inner end, are two inclined or curved feet, d d, which, when said section is drawn out from under the spout O, ride upon the fender or bail a, and lift said section up close against the under side of the spout, the feet also forming stops against said bail or fender to prevent the section D from coming out from under the spout. The section D is connected to the section D by means of L-shaped hinges E, constructed in such a manner that one leaf of each hinge will enter and pass in between the two'parts of the other leaf, thereby making the hinge very strong, and the two leaves of the hinge are so arranged that, when the sections of the chute are extended, the upper edge of the lower section D will be immediately under the lower edge of the section B. The section D is hinged to the section D in the same manner, and by the same means.

The various sections of the chute, as well as the spout O, are made in the form shown in Figs. 3 and 5--tbat is, inclined from each side toward the center, and with flanges projecting upward along each side, the whole made in one piece.

When the chute is not in use the upper sections D D are closed up together, and then moved inward under the spout and body of the cart. The lower sections D D are folded under, into each other, and supported by the fender or bail a, as represented by dotted lines in Fig. 2.

By the construction of the chute the coal falls toward the center, and goes out freely without any liability of its clogging.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the spout O, with bail a, sliding-chute sections D D the section D having curved feet 11, and the flanged pieces I) b on the sections D D and the hinged sections 1) D, with hinges E E, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
