BUGGY-TOP.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OHN A. Glut, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westonia, .in the county of Hancock and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buggy-Tops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to buggy tops.

My principal object is to provide for storing the top when folded so that it will be protected from injury, will be out of the way, and will present a neater apptmraure.

Another object is to secure better protection for the sides and back of the seat when the top is erected during a storm.

Other objects will become apparent from the following description.

The invention consists in the features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts, hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a seat having my improved top attached thereto, the top being shown in its folded position. Fig. 2 is a side view of the parts as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the top raised. Fig. 4- is a cross section, on an enlarged scale, of one of the tubular casings, taken on the line a-a' of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a cross section on an enlarged scale taken on the line y y of Fig. 3 and showing the casing open, Fig. 6 is a central longitudinal section of one of the casings on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 7 is a cross section of the back part of the casing on an enlarged scale.

Referring more particularly to the d rawing, 1 designates the seat of a buggy, which may be of any ordinary or suitable construction, having a back 2 and sides 3. A tubular casing a is fastened to the upper edge of each arm in any suitable manner and extends around back of the seat. The ends of said casing are closed, as at 5. der being se )arate from the other portion thereof and constituting the closure therefor. The ends of said closure are fitted in correspondingly shaped grooves T in the ends of the casing, as best illustrated in Figs. -t and 6. Said covers or closures are, therefore, capable of being turned down in a lateral direction to a position outside of the lower portion of the casing, as shown in Fig.

The top proper consists of a series of bows S and a covering 2) of chosen material, such as silk or mackintosh. The ends of the bows are pivoted on bolts or pins '10 in the front ends of the tubular casing f so that, when they are folded down, their lateral portions are housed in the tubular casings. To the bottom bow there is attached a drop curtain ll conforming to the shape of said bow and of a length to cover the sides and back of the scat. Said drop curtain carries a rod 12 at its lower edge which serves as a weight to hold it down in proper position. It will be understood that the drop curtain is only used when the top is raised, when it can be readily taken out of the tubular casing and arranged so as to protect the sides and back of the seat. \Vhen the top is folded, the drop curtain is raised and placed, together with its red 12, in said casing. \Vhen the top is in its folded position, the sliding covers for the forward ends of the tubular casing are raised to closed positions so as to conceal the pivots of the bows and the lateral portions thereof. These portions of the casing then present a very neat appearance and serve as the arms of the seat. In this position, the portion of the top located behind the seat is covered by a curved piece 13 of leather, canvas, or other suitable material. \Vhen it is desired to raise the top, the covers of the wasing are turned or slid downward into open position, permitting the bows to be readily swung upward. The final operation in adjusting the top over the seat is to lift out the rod '12 and drop the curtain, to which it is attached, down over the sides and back of the seat.
