(No Model.) I
E. s. w. ROSENTHAL. DRAFT GUARD FOR CARS. No. 460,325. Petented Sept. M91.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNESTINE S. \V. ROSENTHAL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DRAFT-GUARD FOR oARs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,325, dated September 29, 18'91.
Application filed May 18, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNESTINE S. V. ROSEN- THAL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and count-y of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draft-Guards for Cars, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanyiu g drawings.
My invention consists of a device which is attached to the interior of a car rearward of a window thereof for closing the space over the back of a seat and likewise on the side thereof, thus preventing draft of air when said window is opened reaching the passenger who is seated behind the same.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a draft arrester or guard device in operative position embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the same in closed position. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of portion of the device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a number of radial arms, which are provided with bosses B, through which passes the rod or shaft 0, as the bearings of said arms. D designates a piece of fabric, which is secured to said arms B, so as to form togethera frame I), which may be folded and opened after the manner of a fan. The shaft 0 is attached to a vertical strip G, which is secured to a box IE, and one end or side of the piece D is also attached to said strip, whereby the frame D is supported and may be folded into said box, it being noticed that the box is fastened to the inner wall of the body of a car rearward of one of the windows thereof, so that when the frame is opened it extends outwardly from said wall or toward the center of the car, so as to project in front of the passenger who is seated rearward of said window.
In order to brace the frame, I employ arms F, which are heavier than the arms A, the same being mounted on the red O and ex- Serial No. 393,129. (No model.)
tending radially therefrom, the same being secured to the piece of fabric D, one of said arms F being at the lower edge of said piece and the other arm being between the upper and lower edges thereof, thus stiffening the piece at relative places. As the bosses B of the arms A are placed side by side on the shaft 0, they brace each other and correspondingly strengthen the frame D.
G designates an auxiliary frame, which is constructed of arms A and fabric D smaller than the frame D, mounted by means of bosses B on the shaft C and secured to the bottom of said frame D or continuous thereof, so as to open downwardly, said frame G serving to close the space between the side of the seat and the wall of the body of the car, as will be seen in Fig. 1.
WVhen the frames D and G are unfolded, the occupant of the seat rearward of the open window is shielded or guarded from the draft of air entering the same both over the seat in front and at the side thereof.
When the device is notrequired, the frames are folded into the box E, as in Fig. 2, and the door of the said box is closed, so that said device is out of the way and concealed, it being evident that when the box is dispensed with the frame D and the shaft 0 may be secured to the wall of the body of the car by means of the strip 0 as the support therefor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A draft-guard for a car, consisting of a main folding frame and an auxiliary foldingframe, said frames being adapted to be mounted adj acent to a car-window, so that the main framewhen extended closes the space over the back of a seat and the auxiliary frame when extended closes the space on the side of said seat, substantially as described.
. ERNESTINE S. \V. ROSENTHAL.
