fyumren STATES PATENT OFFICE The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in window closures, and more particularly to a window closure especially adapted for use in the windows of locomotive cabs.
It is one of the objects of the invention to provide a cab window closure for use in stormy or inclement weather.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of the aforementioned character which will provide clear vision for the engineer when in operative position.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a window closure which may be readily secured in operative position without the use of separate fastening elements.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a window closure which may be readily attached to and removed from the window opening in connection with which it is used.
A still further object of the invention resides in a novel arrangement of parts whereby the window closure may be employed and at the same time provides ample ventilation for the interior of the locomotive cab.
lVith the above and other objects in view, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the forward end of an electric locomotive showing a device constructed in accordance with the present invention in place in one of the cab windows thereof,

Referring more particularly to the drawextended inwardly of the cab window open ings, the device. comprises a main frame member 10 which 1s provided wlth a mudow or, similar opening 11. Side members 12 are hingedly connected to the frame A1 member 10 as at 13, and are adapted to fold inwardly thereof. There are two of these side members, and each is, formed with ,a channel or the like 14: extending along its free edge which channel is adapted to receive its respective side edge of the cab window opening in which the-device is to be placed as "illustrated at 15 in Figure 5 of the drawings. When the side members 12 are folded inwardly of the main frame member 10 as illustrated in Figure 6, they are retained in this position by means of clips or like 16 which are pivotally mounted at 17 and are adapted to swing about their pivotal points into engagement with the side members and out of engagement therewith to permit of swinging outwardly as illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings. The "side members 12 are each provided with a windowop'ening or'the' like 17, and ventilating openings or the like 18 may also be provided in these members, if desired. A rain shed 19, preferably in the form of an angle iron may extend along the upper portion of the main frame member 10, and t similar members 20 maybeemployed over the windows 17 of the side members if desired. r
A bottom end member21 is hingedly connected as at 22 to the main frame member 10, see Figure 6L, and this bottom member 21 is formed on its under face with a channel 23 which receives the film 2 1 of the locomotive cab window opening. This bottom member 21 may be provided with an opening 25 adapted to, be closed by a sliding closure member 26 and this opening provides for ample ventilation of the interior of the closure member As best illustrated in Figure 4, a top end wall such as 30 is provided. "This top end wall has a depending flange 31 and anextending outer edge portion 32 which'overlies the top edge of'themain frame member 10.

When it is desired to place the device in position in a locomotive cab window, the lower end member 21'is folded downwardly and the side members folded outwardly after which the member 21 is again folded upwardly. The side members 12 arenow engaged with the side edges; of the window opening, the said side edges being received in the channels 14 of the. side members as illustrated in Figure 5. After this been done, the end member is folded to its downward position in which it'is shown in dotted lines in Figure 7 and its ends engage the side members near their lower ends and thus prevent movement of the side members about their hinges 13 and prevent their becoming disengaged with the side edges of the window opening, thus holding the device in place without employing separate fastening means. The top wall 30 may or may not be placed in position as desired, and when not employed, permits of greater ventilation.

From the foregoing it will be apparent that the present invention provides anew andnovel device of the character set forth inwhich all of the objects of the invention are carried out in a highly efficient manner.
