VENTILATOR.
Application filed July 13, 1917, Serial No. 180,327. Renewed July 23, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK GRAF, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to window ventilators, and has for its object to provide an improved device of this kind carried by the window sash and adapted to be adjusted to regulate the amount of air admitted and the direction in which it is directed.
Another object is to provide means for carrying the air admitted through the ventilator to a distant point, said means in cluding a hood detachably connected to the ventilator, and a pipe or tube for conducting the air from said hood to the desired point. Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompan ing drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined iu the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is an inside elevation of the bottom portion of a window-sash equipped with ventilators in accordance with this invention.
Fig. :3 is a similar view of the outside of the sash.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a window-sash having gratings 2, provided with slots 3, secured over openings 4 through the sash by brackets 5, the said gratings being arranged on the outer face of the sash. On the inner face of the sash, frames 6 are secured around Specification of Letters Patent.

cured at one edge to the frame and at the other edge to the closure, so as to prevent air from passing through this space.
The closure 7 has side plates 10 attached to its lateral edges to closethe sides when the closure is opened, as shown in Fig. 3. Said closure is further equipped with an extension leaf 11 hinged at 12 to the outer free edge of the said closure and adapted to be swung at any desired angle with respect thereto. The hinged edges of the closure 7 and leaf 11 are preferably rabbeted, as at 13, to prevent air from passing directly through between them. A knob or handle 14 on the closure 7 serves to adjust the same at any desired angle with respect to the sash. When said closure and extension leaf are arranged as illustrated in Fig. 3, the air which enters through the gratings 2 and openings 4: will be directed in an upwardly direction and direct draft upon the occupants of the room will be avoided.
In order to conduct fresh air to a distant point, as to an inside room having no windows, a hood 16 is fitted over an inwardly projecting flange 15 on the frame 6. This hood 16 has converging walls 17 terminating in a tubular portion 18 around which a tube or pipe 19 is fitted. When the hood is used, the extension leaf 11, of the closure 7, is folded inward, as shown in Fig. 4E, and rests on a block 21 on the inner face of said closure. It will be understood that the hood is detachably fitted around the flange 15 on the frame 6, and that the tube or pipe 19 may be of any length and used for conducting the air to any desired point.
The gratings 2 have ledges or flanges 20 extending upwardly within the slots 3 for excluding rain from the openings a in the sash.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States is:
l. A window ventilator having an opening through the same, a closure for said opening hinged at its lower edge to the inner face of the ventilator and an extension leaf hinged to the closure near its free edge and on the side thereof facing the ventilator, whereby said leaf may be concealed in the opening when the closure is shut.
2. A window ventilator having a large opening through the same, a projecting frame around said opening, a relatively small tube for conducting air to a distant point, and a hood having one end to detachably fit over the frame around said open- 10 ing and the other end to fit said tube.
