DOUBLE-ACTING SPRING-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,690, dated February 14, 1899.
Application filed February 3, 1898. Serial No. 669,003. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OTHO C. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Acting Spring- Hinges; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing the position of the clutch with respect to the loose hinge-plate when the door is closed. Fig. 4. is a similar View showing the position of the same parts as the door is swung to one side. Fig. 5 is a face view showing a more complete form of hinge applied with the-door open.
This invention is designed to provide a don-- ble-acting spring-hinge which is particularly adapted for use upon heavy doors and which is provided with means for preventing the door from dropping or sagging away from the jamb or post; also, to provide a hinge of this character which can be readily manufactured and applied, which is strong and durable, and which is thoroughly efficient and practical.
The invention is also designed to provide a hinge having a spring which is so arranged that it may be thrown entirely out of operation or which may be made to close the door in one direction, but not in the opposite direction, or in both directions, at will of operator.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, andpointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates a door post or j amb, and 2 a swinging door.
3 and 4 designate two 'fixed hinge-plates which are firmly secured to the face of the,
jamb and are provided with alined pintleeyes 5. Said plates are separated from each other by a slot or recess 6, which extends back into the jamb. 7 and 8 are two similar hinge-plates which are secured to the rear edge of the door, being separated from each other by a slot or recess 9, which extends back into the door. Said plates 7 and 8 have the alined pintle-eyes 10.
11 designates a loose hinge-plate which has at one edge pintle-eyes 12, which register with the eyes 5 of the plate 3 and are connected thereto by a pintle 13, and at itsopposite edge pintle-eyes 15, which register with and are connected to the eyes 10 of the plate 7 by a pintle 14*. 15 is a second and similar loose hinge-plate which is connected to the plate 4 by a pintle 16 and to the plate 8 by a pintle 17.
Pivoted within the recess 6 of the jamb is a clutch device, the main function of which is to prevent the door from sagging or moving bodily away from the jamb on the loose hingeplates. This clutch consists of a plate of general triangular form, pivoted at one apex within the recess 6 and having at its other two corners the nearly-circular projecting portions 18 and 19. In the upper face of the projection 18 is a camgroove 20, which is open at its outer end, and in the lower face of the projection 19 is a similar groove 21. In the lower face of the projection 18 is a nearly-circular cam-bearing seat 22, open at one side, and in the upper face of the projection 19 is a similar cam-bearing seat 23.
to engage the cam-groove 20 of the projection 18, and on the upper end of the pintle 17 is a similar roller 25, which is designed to engage the groove 21 of the projection 19. The cam-bearing seat 22 is arranged to be engaged by the upper end portion of the adjacent pintle-eye 15 of the loose plate 15, while the cam-bearing seat 23 is designed to be engaged by the pintle-eye of the loose plate 11. The said pintle-eyes are each cut away upon one side, as indicated at 26, to adapt them to pass into and out of the said seats.
As thus far described the hinge is complete for some purposes, and its operation will be described before proceeding to describe other features embraced by the invention in its more complete form.
When the door is in closed position, the stud- rollers 24 and 25 are in engagement with the outer arms of the respective cam-grooves and 21 and the pintle- eyes 12 and 15 are in entering positions with respect to the cambearing seats 22 and 23. When the door is opened to the right, the pintle-eyes of the plate 7 turn upon the pintle 14 and the eyes of the loose plate 15 turn upon the pintle 1G. The stud-roller leaves the cam-groove 21 and the pintle-eye 12 leaves the cam-seat 23. As the stud-roller 25 leaves the clutchgroove 21 it causes a lateral vibratory movement of the clutch to the left and the studroller 24 rides to the inner end portion of the cam-groove 20, while at the same time the pintle-eye 15 rides back into the cam-bearing seat 22. The parts remain in this position during the entire further movement of the door in opening and also as it swings back until it reaches a nearly-closed position. It will be seen that at this time the relative positions of the loose hinge-plates are such that in so far as they are concerned the door might move bodily away from the jam-b; but this is effectually prevented by the clutch, which operates to make any such movement impossible. As the door comes to its full closed position the stud-rol1er 25 enters the outer arm of the groove 21, thereby causing a reverse lateral vibratory movement of the clutch, and the pintle-eye 12 comes into position to enter and enters the cam-bearin g seat 23 as the door passes the center and swings to the left, while at the same time the stud-roller 24 leaves the inner arm of the cam-groove 20 and passes into its outer arm and the pintleeye 15 rides out of the cam-seat 22. As the door swings to the left the bearing is upon the pintles 13 and 17 and the operation of the clutch is the reverse of that just described.
The invention also embraces the use of a supplemental hinge adjacent to that just described. This supplemental hinge consists of the two fixed hinge-plates and 31, the former being secured to the jamb and the latter to the door, and a loose hinge-plate 32, provided with pintle-eyes 33 at one edge,which register with the eyes of the plate 30, and
with similar eyes 34, which register with eyes of the plate 31.
35 and 36 designate the two pintles which, respectively, connect the opposite edges of the said loose plate to the fixed plates and complete the hinge connection.
When it is desired to make the hinge a spring-hinge, ahelical spring 37 is connected at one end to the loose plate 32 and at the opposite end to the loose plate 11 of the main hinge, and to provide means whereby said spring may be thrown out of operation in both directions or in one direction only the said plate 32 is divided into two sections a and b and the plate 15 of the main hinge is divided into two similar sections 0 and d. The ends of the spring are connected, respectively, to the sections aand c. The pintles 17 and 36 are made vertically movable in order that they may be withdrawn from engagement with the pintle-eyes of the sec tions at and c, and for this purpose said pintles are respectively provided with the outwardly- bent handle portions 38 and 39. 40 and 41 are guides and keepers for the said handle portions. The pintle 36 has a collar 42 thereon, which is designed to engage either one of two notches 43 cut in the adjacent edge of section Z) of the loose plate 32 for the purpose of holding the pintle in either one of its two adjustments. The said collar is flattened 01f upon one side and can only be disengaged from the hinge-plate to permit the movement of the pintle vertically by a partial rotary movement to bring the fiat side opposite to the notches.
When both the pintles 17 and 36 are withdrawn from engagement with the sections a and c, the spring is rendered entirely inoperative, as will be readily seen. When, however, the pintle 36 is the only one which is withdrawn, the spring will be active when the door is opened to the right, but will be inactive when it is opened to the left, for the reason that when the door is opened to the right the section a remains on the jamb, while the section 0 is carried over by the door and the spring is put under tension; but when the door is opened to the left both sections at and 0 remain on the jamb. By a similar operation if the pintle 16 be the one withdrawn the spring will be inactive when the door is opened to the right, but will be active when it is opened to the left. The terms right and left as herein used have reference to the drawings only.
Inasmuch as the spring can thus be thrown out of operation when the door is to remain open the life of the spring is thereby greatly extended, and frequent rewinding is unnecessary. Inasmuch as the operation of rewinding the ordinary door-spring is a matter which requires the services of a mechanic the avoidance of the frequent necessity therefor is a matter of considerable advantage.
I do not herein claim the particular arrangement of the spring and the devices for connecting and disconnecting the same from the loose hinge-plate sections, the same being fully described and claimed in my pending application, Serial N 0. 662,187.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a double-acting hinge, the combination with the fixed hinge-plates, of the two loose hinge-plates, the four pintles which connect the loose plates to the fixed plates and a laterally-vibrating clutch arranged to engage both the said loose hinge-plates and prevent the separation of the parts connected by the hinge, substantially as described.
2. In a double-acting door-hinge, the combination with the fixed jamb-plates, the fixed door-plates, the two loose hinge-plates, the four pintles which connect the said loose plates to the fixed plates, of the pivoted laterally-vibrating clutch having opposite lateral cam portions or projections, and means carried by the said loose hinge-plates for engaging the said cam portions or projections, substantially as specified.
3. In a double-acting door-hinge, the combination with the fixed jamb-plates, the fixed door-plates, the two loose hinge-plates, and the four pintles which connect the loose plates to the fixed plates and form the hinge c011- nections, of the pivoted laterally-vibrating clutch device formed with two projecting portions, each of which has a cam-groove-in one tions, each of which has a cam-groove in one face and a cam-bearing seat in the opposite face, the antifriction-rollers carried by the said loose plates and engaging the said camgrooves, and the pintle-eyes on said loose plates designed to engage the said bearingseats, substantially as described.
5. In a double-acting door-hinge, the combination with the fixed jambplates, the fixed door-plates, the two loose'hinge-plates, and the four pintles which connect the said loose plates to the fixed plates, of the pivoted laterally-vibrating clutch device having opposite cam portions or projections, means carried bythe said loose hinge-plates whichengage the said portions or projections, and a supplemental hinge adjacent to the hinge connection first described, together with a coiled spring connecting said main and supplemental hinges, and means whereby either one or both ends of the said spring may be operatively disconnected from said hinges, substantially as specified.
