siding at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hinge Mechanism, of which the following isa full, 4
clear concise, and exact description, refer- ;encebeing had to the accompanying drawin describing my invention asapplied particularly to double acting doors. vThe description herein `therefore concerns itself particularly with hinge mechanism for double acting doors and I will set forth in what follows a particular specific form which my invention may take.
The principal feature of my invention concerns itself with the provision of three hinge members, two of which are permanently mounted upon and associated with the third member in such a way as to be swung upon said .third member and also adapted to inter-lock at certain angular positions. This feature of my invention may be applied to great advantage to hinge mechanism for double acting doors and in the particular form in which the invention is herein illustrated I have a hinge element mounted on the jamb and a hinge element mounted on the door; these hinge elements being united by a web adapted to cause the jaw of one element to interlock with the pivotal point 0f the other element at certain angles, and become the pivotal point on the release of the opposite element. The particular structure thus referred to contemplates a member having two pintles, one at each edge; and two hinge members pivotally attached thereto, each of said pivotally hung members provided on its opposite edge with jaws or clasps adapted to engage these pin.- tles alternately as the door swings to and fro; the pintles being of such a character as to engage both jaws when the door is in its normal or closed position. manently interlocked and form a supporting element in the swinging of the door. The swinging of the door in the oppositedirection reversing the process with the opposite pintle and jaws. Thus when my invention 1s Vapplied to hinge mechanism for .double acting doors I am able to dispense with one or more operating plates of the ordinary double acting hinge and I am also `enabled at all time to provide a solid pivotal support for the door irrespective of the direction of its swing.
t I will describe now the specific form outlined above which my invention may take in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view showing a hinge constructed -in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line ct-a of Fig. `1, the hinge however being closed.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 1, I show a hinge element 14 which is adapted to be fastened to the j amb through the agency of suitable holding devices. This hinge element 14 has a pintle 3 held in place between lugs 5, 5. This hinge element having on one edge-jaws adapted to interlock with pintle 4. A second hinge element 13 is attached to pintle 4 with the lugs 5, 5, and has jaws 8, 8 on the opposite edge thereof adapted to interlock with the pintle 3. This hinge element 13 is adapted to be fastened to the door through the agency of suitable holding devices. The jaws of 8, 8, on hinge elements 13 and 14, being arranged for coperation and interlocking under certain conditions with the pintles 3 and 4; the said jaws and the said lugs being adapted for association with and periodical interlocking with the pintles 3 and 4. The pintles 3 and 4 are cylindrical except that two flattened surfaces are provided as shown more clearly in Fig. 2.
A third hinge element 15 is in the nature of a central web member and is permanently associated with both pintles 3 and 4 so as to assist in transferring the weight of one pintle to thev other. In this structure the member 13 is permanently associated with a pintle 4 and the member 14 is permanently associated with the pintle 3. Thus each member 13 and 14 carries a pintle and is adapteld to engage at certain times the other pint es.
It will be seen that the opening 10 between the jaws 8 is of sufficient size to accommodate the flattened portion of the pintles 3 and 4 so that should the pintles 3 and 4 pass through the opening 10 into the circular opening 11` and the opening 10 nol longer be parallel to the flattened sides of this pintle,` then the jaws 8 hold the elements 13 and 14 in airotatable position upon the pintles 3 and 4.
`It vwill thus be seen that the element 13 swinging on the pintle 4 the opening 10 will be in proper position to slide past the flatte'ned surface of the pintle 3 and if thel pressure in thatdirection is continued the same Vinterlocks with pintle 3 and the jaws 8` on hinge element 14 will pass free of the pintle 4. TheI pntle 3 becoming a pivotal-point for hinge element. 13; the jaws on said 13 having passed away from parallelism with the flat* tened sides of the pintle 3. In a similar-way thev element 114 may beswung about' the pintle 4. y
It will be noted that 'eachA of the hinge elements carries the pintle solidly held in one edge thereof and has jaws on the opposite maintaining a pivotal relation to the. web
