UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL UNGER AND MOSES LEININGER, OF POTTSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
UNDERGARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,102, dated February '7, 1899.
Application filed November 15, 1898. Serial No. 696,566. (NomodeL) T aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL UNGER and Mosns LEININGER, citizens of the United States, residing at Pottsville, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undergarments; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to undergarments,
has especial reference to that class known as union-garments or combination-suits, and has for its object the production of an article that can be readily put on and that will afiord the maximum protection to the vital parts of the human body; and it consists in certain improvements in construction, which will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a front view of our improved garment, and Fig. 2 a rear view of the same.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates the body portion of the garment, which is provided with a vest B of the same material, or the garment may be of cotton and the vest of woolen fabric, in either case it being secured to the body at the armholes by joining it to the front of the sleeve at the seam a. It is divided at b from the neck-opening c downward. It is free from the body below the armholes, and the two sides of the vest are secured together, preferably by buttons d.
C is a flap extending across the front of the garment and is provided with sides 6 e, which are free from substantially the lower end of the armhole, extend upward to or near the upper end thereof, and are detachably secured at their upper ends across the shoulder by buttons f, thus afiording the maximum size of opening for the passage of the body into the garment when the flap is open and a cover for the vest B when the flap is closed. The flap when open also affords ready access to the vest for buttoning the sides 6 e together.
For some purposes the flap may not extend higher than a line across from the front of the neck.
D indicates the back ,which is provided with a free skirt 9.
E indicates a flap the width of the garment and is made of two thicknesses of material at h, which is of a width to cover the skirt g and forms a protector for the delicate organs of the body, such as the kidneys, and thereby forms three thicknesses of material across the small of the back, The upper end of the flap is secured to the back of the garment by buttons 1'.
The garment thus constructed is hygienic, fits the body snugly, and affords ample protection to the vital organs of the body without producing discomfort to the wearer.
The garment is preferably made of woven material; but it is obvious that it maybe knit of either cotton, wool, or a mixed cotton and wool.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim is- An undergarment comprising the leg, body and sleeve portion and having a vest extending across the front from sleeve to sleeve and connected therewith and extending downward nearly to the waist-line of the garment but free therefrom below the armholes and divided from the neck-opening downward, and an outer flap covering the vest and having its edges free from the lowest portion of the armhole upward, and means for detachably securing the same to the garment at the upper margin of the flap, as set forth,
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL UNGER. MOSES LEININGER.
