LEWIS, of Washington, District of'Colunlbia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in liVashing-Shields; and Ido hereby deelare. that the following is u full, clear, vand exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the Aletters of reference-marked thereon. In the 'annexed drawings making part of thisl A represents, th e shield, which 'is made of' vulcanized India-rubber, or of leather or cloth, or any other material which may be evidently usedfor this purpose. The shield may be made' short, as seen in Figure 2, or

it may be extended, as shown in Figure 1,. to cover the arm as far as the elbow and part of the hand. Where v thc shield is extended, as shown Ain gfl, it will be necessary either to have the back of it open or made of some elastic material, se that the hand can be passed in. If it is'made open,'straps with buckles or elastic bands can 'be .used for closing and continingit to the arm. vThe shield is provided upon itsface, or that side which is to be .used for washing, with a series -"fbars or corrugatious, BB. These barsl may be formed of rubbei or leather or any other suitable materiaheither upon the shield or made' separately and confined to it. The shield is open, as seen., at.both' ends, andextends down on .the handonly far enough to wash conveniently wit-hout interfering with the working of the fingers. Oneof these shields, (the sh'ort one,) can be used upon the right hand and the other-upon the left, so that elothes,'and^especia.lly sm'all'articles, canvbe washed by them without the use of the common wash-board. The article te Abe washed can be confined to the arm and shield by aband of rubber, marked- C, while it is being rubbed with the other hand with its shield. VTwo shields of mediumlength may be used upon both hands for washing upon the ordinary wash-board. It will appear very -evident that inthe dse of these shields,' the' hands ot the operator will be protected from injury, while the bars upon the said shield will rery much facilitate the .washing of clothes without fear of that damagevto clothing usually experienced ,iu vwashing by machinery.V In., thisj shield, thel thumb and fingers are free to manipulate the clothing being washed. v

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-,.
