- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. POE, OF SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA.
BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,884, dated January 17, 1899.
Application filed May 5, 1898. Serial No. 679,747. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. POE, a citizen of the United. States, and a resident of Santa Monica, county of Los Angeles, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in brushes; and the object thereof is to provide simple, economic, and effective means for facilitating the operation of brushing walls and similar surfaces beyond the normal reach of the operator.
The invention consists in the novel arrangements of the several parts and will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the device, partly broken away and in extended position. Fig. 2 is a similar view in retracted position; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation, the handle being partly broken away.
In applying my invention I employ an extensible handle A, constructed on the Jacobs ladder principle in the usual manner employed in such devices. The pivot a is extended beyond the forward face of the handle, and upon this extension is revolubly mounted the pinion b, which is in turn fixed to the brush-. rms B B B B at the point of juncture. A guide-plate C is provided with a suitable hole adapted to fit loosely over the pivot a, and a lip c, bent over and adapted for sliding contact with the back of the reciprocating rack d, which meshes with the pinion b and prevents the disengagement of said rack and pinion. The lower end of this rack D is preferably curved, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and provided with a suitable hole adapted to receive the pivot a, upon which it turns freely.
The brushes may be of any desired form, or a single circular brush may be substituted for the cross form shown. The guide-plate C may be changed in form or dispensed with entirely and equivalent means for guiding the rack substituted; but the arrangement pinion, will be caused to revolve. The motion thus imparted to the brush will be rotary-progressive, the best for rapid action.
It is obvious that additional sections of handle may be fastened to the device shown by means of the rivet-holes a a thus giving greater length and greater range of action.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
1. An improved brush embodying an extensible handle, a brush revolubly mounted upon said handle, and means actuated by extending said handle, for revolving said brush, substantially as shown and described.
2. An improved brush embodying an extensible handle, a brush revolubly mounted upon said handle, a pinion fixed to said brush and a rack meshing therewith and actuated by extending said handle, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres ence of two witnesses, this 27th day of April, 1898.
JAMES M. POE.
