Specification of Letters Yatent.
lPatented Jan. 'td'mjfl.
Application fiicdianuaiy 29, 1916. Serial No. 75,150.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Gnonsn H. Lovs, a citizen of the United States, residing at lt ueblo in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tooth-Brushes, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to an improved tooth brush and the principal object of the invention is to'provide improved means for rotatably mounting a tooth brush and to further provide improved means for rotating the brush so that the brush may be caused to rapidly rotate first in one direction and then. in the opposite direction, the actuating lever for the shaft of the brush being carried by the handle of the brush and moved through the medium of the thumb.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the brush that with a small amount of efiort the brush can be caused to rotate very rapidly and thus the teeth thoroughly cleansed.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the brush that it will comprise a comparatively few number of parts strongly connected to provide a durable, but at-the same time light brush, easy to handle.
. This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the brush in top plan; Fig. 2 is a View showing the brush in side elevation; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The handle 10 of this brush is provided with a cut out forming a passage wayll and is further provided with a bridge or guiding bracket-12 extending across the passage way 11 to guide the movement of the rack bar 13 carried by the actuating lever 14 and braced by means oi the rod or bracing arm. 15. This actuating lever is pivotally con nected with the handle '10 means of the thumb screw 16 and is yieldably held in the normal position by means of the spring 17 so that when pressure is releascch it will he returned to the normal position, a linger 18 being provided to prevent the spring It?" from moving the rack bar 13 entirely'out of the passage way 11. An eye 19 is provided for the thumb to fit into so that this lever can be easily moved by means of the thumb. with the fingers passing through the eyes 20.
lhe brush housing 21 is provided with a collar or neck 22 which fits upon the end of. the handle 10 and is secured in place by means of set screws 23. The shaft 2% ofthe brush 25 passes through the brush housing 21 and the end of the handle 10 and. has each end formed into a pivot pin 26, which pivot pin fits into bearings 27 and 28. formed in the outer end of the brush housing 21 and in the end of the handle 10. A gear pinion 29 is rigidly mounted upon the brush-shaft" within the passage way 11 and is engaged".- by the teeth of the rack bar 13 so that 58 K the rack bar is moved with the lever the:
brush shaft will be rotated according to the with the fingers passing through eyes 20 and the thumb passingthrough 'eye 19, the sictuating'lever 14 can be moved toward. the handle and the brush will be rotated in one direction. Upon-releasing the pressure upon the lever the spring 17 willreturn the lever to the normal position shown in Fig. 1 and the brush will be rotated in'the 'oppositu' 50 direction. When it is desired to clean the brush, or replace the same with a new one, the brush housing can be removed from the handle after releasin shaft easily remove case it is desired to replace the brush, or if it is only desired to thoroughly clean the same, the brush can be cleaned and the brush housing then put back in place. I have therefore provided a tooth brush which 90 will be very easy to use and which will he so constructed that it can be easily cleaned and thus kept sanitary.
A brush comprising a, handle provided 35 with a transversely extending out out form.- ing a pamage way, a brush housing releasahly connected with said handle, a brush with a shafthaving one end set screw 23 and the. I I from the handle in ported by said housing and having the oppo- In testimony whereof I aflix my. signature site end portion extended through said pasin presence of two Witnesses.
sage Way and rotatably supported by said handle a gear carried by said brush shaft, GEQRGE H. LOVE.- 5 and an actuating lever carried by said handle and provided with a rack bar extending Witnesses:
through the passage Way and having its J. L. VRQOM,
teeth meshing with the teeth of said gear. CHARLIE C. PIXLEY.
