Apphcationled February 17, '1912. eral No. 678,306.
- To all eli-hom it' muy conf-@rmt e 33e itlnioivn that. l, lnwin* rl. Bonnin, a
deference 'to the accompanying citizen of the United' States, and a resident yof,thejcityof Cumings, county of T aill, and
State of North Dakota, have invented certainneiv and useful Improvements in rfooth- Brushes, of'ivhichthe following is a specification. I A
A"My 'invention relates to tooth l rushes and more specifically to that class thereof in -Wl'iich the brush proper is of the rotary type Which is pressed against the teeth and inanua'lly. rotated at high speed in effecting the .thorough cleaning ot the latter.
The objectof my invention: is the producftion of'a tooth brush of the character nientioned which' will be of improved construction' and efficient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
"With these objects in view, my invention Consists in the combinations and arrange- `ments of` parts hereinafter described and claimed.
-My invention will be best understood by forming'a part of this specification, and in Whicha Figure l is 'a side elevation or a tooth `brush embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a '-30 vsubstantially central section of the device, Fig. 3 is an enlarged` cross section talren on line f m 'of Fig. Q, and Fig. is a side elevation of a brush ofa slightly different form frointhat shown in Figs. l andQ, the brush shown in this figure being designed for cleaning the inner surfaces of the teeth, whereas the brush' of the design shown in igs. l and .2 is designedl for use in cleaning the outer surfaces of the teeth. a
f' Thepreferred form of construction, as 'illustrated inthe drawing, comprises a tubular cylindrical supporting member l, said member being formed preferably of Wood, the extremities thereof being reinforced by metallic errules Q and 2. Mounted in the member l is a shaft 3, roller bearings 4 being provided at the ends of said supporting member. One end of the shaft 3 is extended, as shown, the saine supiiorting a rotary brush 5 at its outer extremity, said brush besaid shaft with said lbrusli.- With this con-;
pecicatien o' Letters Patent.
drawingl raient tiene struction, it Will be seenhat.readyattachment or detachment of the' brush -isnifoizded The periphery of the brush isfconcave, as siioivn, in order to adaptthesame especially for use in cleaning theyiouterfjsidesfojfptlie teeth, the concavity ofsaid periphery cor- .1. responding, as will be understood, --w-itl. 4the i transverse4 curvature of the teetli.- In Fig. 4 is shown a brush 5 Whifchisof the saine'co'n'- struction as the brush l'5 exceptv-thatthe,pe- 65 riphery ofthe former is` convex ,inl form,y the' brush 5 being designedzforuse in cleaning the inner sides of the teeth-.the convexityof the periphery thereof conforming sl-ilostantiallyivith the contour .of-ithefinnerf sides of the teeth. The provision of tivo brushes. with peripheries as described adapting the saine for use respectively upon the inner and outer sides of the teeth, will conduce to a thorough cleaning of the latter, When the device is in use'. By providing sha-ft 3 With an elongated extension, as shown, it is possible to insert the brush far into the mouth for cleanin the teeth positioned far back in the inouti. i.
Arranged at the opposite extremity of the shaft 3 is a crank handle 7 which is secured to a stud shaft 8 rotatably mounted in bean. ings 9 formed upon the ferrule 2', collars 10 lpinned to said shaft and which engage against the bearings 9, serving to lock said ment. Secured to the shaft 8 is a gear 11 'which meshes with a pinion l2 fixed to the adjacent end of the shaft '3. lVith this ar- 90 rangement, it will `be seen that an operative connection is established between the clean'- ing brush and the crank handle 7. so that upon rotation of the latter, said brush will be simultaneously rotated. By the employnient of a gear 1l which is considerably larger than the pinion 12 Which is arranged upon the brush shaft,l a high speed of rotation -of said shaft and hence of the brush carried thereby will be secured upon rotation ofthe crank handle at a much lower speed. Threaded upon the vshaft 3 is a nut 13 which together with the pinion 12 prevents relative longitudinal movement of said shaft, said nut 'and pinion engaging against 105 the respective ends of themember l in serving in this connection. Rigidly secured to and laterally projecting from the supporting member l is a handie 14:'. The handle 14- is provided in order 110 the same ma)v be manipulated with the' greatest ease and is ada ted, when in operation.l to effect a very thorough cleaning of the teeth of the user.
mile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying in v invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not -Wish to be limited to the exact details of co1, struction setforth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having descrlbed my invention, What l maaar claim as new and desire vto secure by Letters Patent, ispjf- The combination with a tubular supporting member; of .a driven shaft rotatably mounted therein 'a gear mount-ed upon said shaft; a ferrule mounted upon the terminalof the tubular supporting member adjacent to the gear carried by the driven shaft aforesaid; hearings formed on sa 1d ferrule; a driving shaft mounted for rotation in said bearings; a gear mounted upon said driving shaft for meshinfr with the gear mounted on 'the terminal of tie driven shaft; means for rotating said driving shaft; and a right angularly arranged handle secured to the side of said tubular supporting member In testimony whereof I have signed my name tothis specification m the presence of t\vo subscribing Witnesses. l
