La fig. 4 est une coupe de la fig. 3, selon A-A'.
Electric device for brushing teeth
The object of the present invention is an electrical appliance for brushing teeth intended to obtain an improved cleaning of the teeth, thanks to the fact that the brush is animated by a vertical back-and-forth movement, that is to say perpendicular to the jaw, alone means of removing the remains of food lodged in the dental interstices, and this in a quick and effortless way.
The brush only has to be moved from one end of the jaw to the other, while the cleaning takes place automatically.
The apparatus forming the subject of the invention comprising a housing forming a handle, containing a motor driven by an electric battery, and a shaft extending outside this housing, the outer part of this shaft carrying a brush, is characterized by the fact that it comprises means for transforming the rotary movement of the motor shaft into an oscillating movement of the shaft carrying the brush.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the apparatus forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an overview from the side.
Fig. 2 is a front view of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on a larger scale of the apparatus shown in FIG. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section of FIG. 3, according to A-A '.
The apparatus shown comprises a hollow case formed of two parts 1 and 2, which can be made of molded plastic material, the dimensions of which allow it to be held in the hand. The front part 1, either in the direction of the brush, is drilled so as to allow the shaft 15 which supports at one end, the brush, and at the other end a fork 14 transmitting the reciprocating movement imparted to it by the crankpin. 13 driven into the disc 12. This disc 12 is driven in a rotary movement by the electric motor 3, by means of a set of gears 11 and 10. The four pinions rotate freely in plates 18, 19 and 20 whose positions are obtained by means of screws and barrels which are not shown here, so as not to complicate the drawing.
This reduction system is the same as that commonly used in toys, watches, etc. and the plate 20 can be directly attached to the motor so that the reduction assembly is held in place when the motor is in its correct position determined by a screw 9, passing through part 2 of the housing.
Fig. 4 shows what happens when the engine is running. The crankpin 13, rotating along the dotted line, drives the fork 14 with a reciprocating movement, the angle of which is given by the distance of the crankpin from the axis of the disc 12. The further the crankpin will be from the axis of the disc 12, the greater the movement and the greater the angle. In the embodiment shown, the angle obtained is approximately 30 degrees. The shaft 15 is held in place by a spring washer 16 which engages a groove made in the shaft at a position leaving it a little longitudinal play in the housing. The part of the shaft extending out of the housing is provided with a pin 17, and the end of the handle 21 of the brush which engages this shaft is split.
The slot 22 is machined with two half-circles in the position which is in front of the pin 17, so that when the brush is introduced on the shaft, a notch is felt positioning the brush at the end of its travel.
This pin therefore maintains the brush longitudinally, and at the same time serves to drive the latter according to the reciprocating movement of the shaft 15.
This extremely simple attachment of the brush 21 is necessary, since it must be possible to have a set of several brushes of different colors for each member of a family.
The motor output pole 5 rests directly on the positive pole of the battery 4 housed in part 2 of the housing. The other pole 6 comes to rest directly against the housing if the latter is a metal conducting current, or against a metal strip housed in this housing, if the latter is made of insulating material. In this case, this metal strip would come into contact via its other end with the spring-tab 25 fixed in the bottom 23 of the housing.
This bottom 23 made of insulating material has a slot in which slides a switch button 8 on the inner part of which is riveted a metal strip 7 resting on the negative pole of the battery. When this button is lowered, the lower end of the blade 7 comes into contact with the spring 25, and establishes the electrical circuit starting the motor. The bottom 23 is held in place by a tab molded in its upper part, which engages in a notch 26 of the housing 2. The spring 25 also engages a notch 27 of the housing 2, while making electrical contact with it. the housing 2 if it is made of metal, or with the metal blade molded in this housing ending in the notch 27, if it is made of insulating material. Parts 1 and 2 of the housing can be glued after final assembly, or be held in position by screws not shown here.
The engine supply battery may also consist of a rechargeable accumulator.
One of the advantages of the apparatus described is that it enables children who still have difficulty washing their teeth correctly to obtain a complete cleaning of all the teeth and their interstices, simply by moving said brush in the mouth. from one end of the jaw to the other. For adults, the advantages obtained are: on the one hand, cleaning of a quality rarely performed by an ordinary brush, and on the other hand, a great speed of execution of the cleaning of the teeth and that without effort. In addition, the oscillating speed of the shaft carrying the brush, preferably not exceeding 15 movements per second, does not allow the bristles to injure the gums, and allows the use of brushes which, although of small dimensions are similar to those used manually.
In one model executed, the brush carries bristles with a height of 11 mm, and their diameter is approximately 0.25 mm. Their length gives enough flexibility not to hurt the gums. Also considering the low oscillation angle of the brush, around 30 degrees, and the number of 15 oscillations per second, no part of the mouth can be injured, but on the contrary is reinforced by the massage thus obtained. The main purpose of using a low voltage battery, that is 3 to 6 Volts, is to make the brush absolutely harmless to both children and adults and to create a portable brush, usable in both places without mains current only in camping and military service.
The life of a battery, for an engine such as the one tested on the prototype, which consumes 200 milliamps, is 2 to 3 months, and the low price of a 3-volt torch battery, for example, can even be found. on the saving of employee toothpaste.
