ROTARY-BRUSH GEARING.
Speceation of Letters Patent.
PatentedAug. 15, 1916.
Application filed February 9, 1916. Serial N o. 77,219.
To all fav/tom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvE A. TRUMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alborn, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rotary-Brush Gearing, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to hand operated brushes, and more particularly to the class of rotary hand operated tooth brushes.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a brush of this character wherein the brush body is constructed in a novel manner so as to freely enter the'interstices between and crevices in the teeth when brushing the same so as to thoroughly clean the teeth during the working of the brush.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a brush of this character wherein the brush proper is rotated by actuating a pair of pivotally connected levers, thereby enabling the convenient operation of the brush by the hand of the user.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a brush of this character wherein the construction thereof permits the easy and sanitary cleaning of its parts, as the same are readily separable from each other.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a brush of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form so that the brush proper will be automatically rotated with maximum power, any part of the brush being readily detachable so that when worn a new part can-be substituted, thereby assuring maximum life to the same.
still further object of the invention is the provision of a brush of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in operation, strong, durable and inexpensive in manufacture.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts exemplied in the construction hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which is deiined in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Fignre 1 is a side elevation of a brush constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view therethrough, Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, the same being on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line /l-l of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the brush comprises a stem 5 constituting a handle and formed with a central longitudinal bore receiving a rotatable shank 6, the stem 5 at one end being formed with a shield or brush guard 7 provided with an open side 8, through which projects the bristles of the brush proper, which includes a series of disk-like brush bodies 9, each being made up of a plurality of bristles, the peripheries of the disk-like bodies 9 being outwardly tapered so that the bristles at the center of each body will protrude beyond the bristles at opposite sides thereof which gradually decrease in length toward the center of the disk so that the brush proper will serve to enterinterstices between or crevices in the teeth for the thorough cleaning thereof when the rotary brush is in operation. The brush bodies 9 are detachably mounted upon the shank 6, which is protruded into the shield or. guard 7, and such bodies are spaced from each other through the medium of spacer sleeves 10, the outer end of the shank 6 being journaled in the outer end of the shield or guard 7, which outer end carries a suitable nut 11 for the fastening of the bristle bodies 9vupon the shank, while the inner end of the latter is formed with a square shaped socket l2 for detachably receiving the squared coupling end 13 of a rotating sleeve 14 provided with a pair of peripheral spiral slots 15, and this sleeve let is journaled within a barrel 16 which is detachably connected with the enlarged externally threaded end 17 of the stem 5 so that it may be detached therefrom.
Detachably threaded in opposite ends of the barrel 16 are bearing plugs 18 which serve to center the sleeve 14 and traversable in the slots in said sleeve is a cross pin 19 which is carried by a plunger 2O slidable through the sleeve 111 and also through the outermost plug 18 which is formed with diametrically opposed pivot ears 21 to which are pivotally connected opposedfoperating levers 22, which havepivoted thereto links 23, the same being also pivoted to the outer end of the plunger rod so that on pressing inwardly upon the levers 22 the plunger rod 2O will be forced inwardly of the barrel 16 and the pin 19 traversing the slots 15 in the sleeve 14 will cause the rotation of the latter and its connection with the shank 6 will rotate the brush bodies 9 carried thereby in the shield or guard 7 of the brush.
Surrounding the plunger rod 2O and working against the outermost plug 18 is a coiled expansion spring 24 which also works against a shoulder 25 formed near the outer end of the plunger rod 20, and this spring serves to pull the plunger rod 2O outwardly of the barrel 1G after being manually forced inwardly thereof, thereby reversing the action of the brush bodies 9 on the shank (3, thus it being seen that when the brush is operated the shank G will be reversely rotated and likewise the brush bodies 9 thereon for the cleaning of the teeth when the brush is actuated by the hand of the user.
It is clearly evident that the parts of the brush can be readily separated from each other so as to permit a thorough and sanimy tooth brush will be readily apparent and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A rotary brush of the class described comprising a hollow stem, a shank rotatably mounted in the stem, a spirally Slotted sleeve detachably connected with the shank, a barrel for said sleeve and detachable from the stem, opposed levers pivot-ally supported upon the barrel, links pivoted to the levers, a plunger pivoted to the links and movable within the barrel, a cross pin carried by the plunger and engaging in the spiral slots in the sleeve for traversing the same to rotate said sleeve, and a coiled spring surrounding the plunger and adapted to act thereon for pulling the same outwardly of the barrel after being forced inwardly thereof on compressing the levers.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
