JAR-CLOSURE.
sEcIFIcATIoN forming par: of Letters Patent ivo. 616,890, dated January s, 189e. Appnmnmiednprn13,1898. Santino. 6771401. (No mean.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern/.-
Be it known thatI, GEORGE W. BUEKHART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Closures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists in a j ar-closure, and particularly in the construction of a clampingband adapted to be contracted upon the cover and jar, which latter are provided with oppositely-tapering faces and the band being provided with corresponding faces, so that when it is contracted it will draw the cover onto the top of the jar and make a tight joint.
The invention consists in the construction of this band of a single piece of sheet metal with overlapping ends, which ends are connected by a link, the parts being constructed and operating in the manner hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the top of a jar, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my clampingband, showing it open. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the link. e Fig. lis a vertical section through onerside of the jar and cover, illustrating its construction.
A represents an ordinary fruit-jar, of which B is the cover, fitted thereon, preferably outside of a ange C on the jar, which represents the bust-off flange of the jar in manufacturing the cover, being provided with a downwardly-extending Iiange D at its rear edge, which rests on a packing E on the shoulder F around the outer face of the top of the j ar. The under side of this shoulder is formed by the bevel-face G, and the top is provided with an oppositelybeveled face H, against which the lips I, on opposite edges of the clamping-band J, engage. It is obvious that the contracting of the band about the top will draw the cover tightly upon the packing-ring E. This part of the structure I do not claim, as my invention relates solely to the construction ofthe band itself. Heretofore in the manufacture of such devices it has been found necessary to use a lever which was connected at one end of the band and the fulcrum of which was connected to the other end of the band.
This necessitates a lever of some considerable length and necessitates considerable thickness of the band at the point where the lever is attached and adds considerably to the expense of the device. Vith my invention I form the tongue K at the outer end of the band and form a bearing therein for one end of the link L by simply bending the end of the tongue around the ends of the link, which, as shown in Fig. 3, is U-shaped. This saves any riveting at this point, as would be necessary in putting afulcrurnV-point in for the 1ever, as heretofore. lI provide on the inner end of the band theapertured ears M, and I provide on the inner end of the link the outwardly-extending pins O. These pins may be' engaged with the apertures in the ears M by pressing the two sides of the link together, then inserting the end between the ears, and
allowing the legs to separate by the tension of the spring-link and enter the apertures, as shown in Figs. l and 2. Thus I am enabled not only to dispensewith the long lever formerly required, but also to dispense with an-y riveting or similar labor in getting the parts together, thereby greatly reducing the expense of manufacture and simplifying the device. The parts being thus constructed, the band is opened, as shown in Fig. 2, engaged over the cover, and then the operator presses on the outer end of the link and forces it'into parallelism with the side of the can, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby moving the link beyond the central line of strain between the pivotal points thereof and locking it in position in the well-known manner. To effect this, I usually find it necessary to curve the link slightly to conform to the sideof the Jar.
Vhat I claim as my invention isl. In a jar-closure, the combination with the jar and its cap having bearing-faces for the clamping-ring, of the clamping-ring made of sheet metal with overlapping ends and a link connected at its opposite ends directly to the opposite ends of the clamping-band.
2. In a jar-closure, of the kind described, the clam ping-band formed of sheet metal with overlapping ends, a link having its opposite ends connected directly to the ends of the band, such connection being formed at one end by bending a hook in the band and at IOO parts being arranged substantially as shown y and described.
4. The Combination with a jar and cap having bearing-faces for a clamping-ring, of a 15` elampingring of sheet metal having inwardlybent lips I and outwardly-bent apertured ears and a tongue provided at its end with a hook, and a Wire link held at one end by said hook on the tongue and at the other end by zo said apertured ears.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
