In the applied position of the fastening device with respect to the shipping case, the mounting plate 28 is secured to the outer side of the wall 15 as has been described, while the clamping member is arranged so that its end portions 20 are extended through the recesses 17, with the intermediate portion 19 disposed to the upper side of thestrip 16 and extending transversely of the end of the shipping case.
.In the inactive or released position of the device as shown in the dash lines in Fig. 2, theclamping member is elevated so that the intermediate portion 19 is suiiiciently spaced from thetop of the case as to permit the ready insertion of the lid end 18 therebeneath. In this position of the clamping member the lever 24 likewise occupies an elevated position in which it is sufiiciently spaced from the wall 15 that it may be readily gripped and moved to lowered position for drawing the clamping member downwardly so that the intermediate portion 19 is caused to tightly embrace the lid end and thus securely retain the lid infixed position upon the shipping case. The lowermost position of the lever 24 is illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, and in this position of the lever it is important to note that the pivotal connection between the clamping member and the lever as provided by the hooked ends 22 and the ears 23, is positioned at one side of the pivot 26 of the lever. The intermediate portion 19 of the clamping member is bowed downwardly or in the directionof the lid, andbeing formed ofresilient metal, it is apparent that when the clamping member is forced downwardly through actuation of the lever 24, the intermediateportion 19 will be flexed and thus placed under tension. By reason of this tension the intermediate portion constantly acts to urge the clamping member upwardly, but this urging action is inefi'ective to swing the lever upwardly by reason ofthe position of the pivotal. connection between the clamping member and lever. In other words, this pivotal connection is in a past dead center position with respect to the pivot 26, and consequently any pull exerted upwardly by the clamping member will tend to retain the lever in the position illustrated in Fig. 5. In consequence of this mode of operation, it will be manifest'that once the lever is moved to actuate the clamping member,the latter is retained in' clamping position with respect to the lid with such a degree of security as to prevent the accidental'release'of the clamping'member. Yet, this action does not interfere w th the ready release of the fastenmg dQVlCe for it is only necessary to move the lever outwardly past dead center position when the intermediate portion 19 will react to throw the lever to elevated position and thus permit such elevation of the clamping member that the lid is disengaged and may thus be removed.
In the active position of the lever 24 the stud 30 projects through the lever as illustrated in Fig. 5 so that the sealing device 32 may be extended through the opening 30*. Once thesealing device. is applied, the lever cannot be actuated to release the lid without detection.
An important feature of my invention is the coaction between the linear portions 21 and the dished walls 17 of the recesses. As the clamping member is drawn downwardly by actuation of the lever 24, the linear portions 21 move into the dished walls 17 and remain therein even in the final clamping position of the member. The dishing of these walls is such that they provide abutments for the linear portions 21 to prevent movement of the latter horizontally and as a consequence the lid 18 is firmly held against any edgewise or transverse shifting. Thus, with the clamping member in clamping position. the lid is securely held in closed position on the case.
Although I have herein. shown and described only one form of shipping case and one form of lid fastening device embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made herein without departing from the spirit of the invention and the spirit and scope of the appended claims. I
I claim:
. 1. In combination, a shipping case having a removable lid, recessed elements at opposite sides Of'tllG shipping case so disposed as to have portions of the lid bridging said recesses, clamping members extending through said recesses and having portions disposed at the outer side of the lid and spanning the latter, and means on the shipping case for actuating the clamping members to cause said portions to clamp the lid in closed position on the shipping case.
2. In combination, a shipping case having a removable lid, recessed elements at opposite sides of the shipping case so disposed as to have portions of the lid bridging said recesses, resilient clamping members extending through said recesses and havingportions disposed at the outer side of the lid and spanning the latter, levers for actuating the clamping members to cause said portions to clamp the lid in closed position on the shipping case, and an operative connection be-,
tween the members and thelevers in which the levers may assume a past dead center positionv when said portions are in clamping position with respect to the lid so as to retain said portions in said position.
3. In combination, a shipping case having a removable lid, strips secured to the opposite ends of the case and provided with recesses, a pair of clamping members, each constructed of resilient wire and of substantially triangular formation to' provide an intermediate portion spanning one end of the lid and overlying the latter, and end-portions extending downwardly through the recesses, 21
to pair of levers each connected to the end portions of the corresponding clamping member, and means for mountng the levers on the case so that upon actuation thereof, the clam ing members will be drawn downwardly and eld in a position in which the intermediate portions embrace the ends of the lid to hold'the latter in closed position on the shipping case.
