DEVIGE FOR APPLYING, REMOVING AND SEALING JAR COVERS OF MASON JARS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH T. TILLMAN and PHILIP SoHwnIoH, citizens of theUnited States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Devices for Applying, Removing and Sealing Covers of Mason Jars; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention provides an extremely simple and highly eflicient device for applying, removing and sealing covers of ([ason jars, and, generally stated, the in vention consists of the novel construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
The device comprises two levers or handle members pivotally connected and formed with approximately semi -circular coverclamping segments between their handle ends and pivot. One of the clamping segments is formed with a depending lug or ear to which a sealing roll is journaled. This roll is so positioned that when the clamping segment is applied to the upper portion of the jar cover, it, said roll, will engage and run over the edge flange of the cover and press or iron out the same so that even if distorted or rough, said edge flange will be made smooth and form a tight or sealed joint with the rubber gasket or ring customarily employed.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged section approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The numeral 4 indicates a Mason jar, the numeral 5 the jar cover and the numeral 6 the rubber gasket or ring. .As is well known, the edge flange 5, of the cover, is frequently distorted or bent by one cause or another, but usually by the use of a knife or the like in loosening the cover from a jar to which it has previously been applied.

Vhen the tool is applied to the cover as shown and the handle ends of the levers 7 are pressed together with considerable force, the jar cover will be held firmly by the clamping segments, considerably assisted by the action of the roll 11, and the cover can then be turned either on or off with very great force. \Vhen the cover has been tightly screwed onto the j ar. and the jar cover then lightly clamped, the tool can be rotated around the cover, causing the roll 11 to travel over the edge flange 5 and iron or press out any irregularities in said flange, thereby tightly sealing the jar.
To enable the lever members to be made of quite light or thin sheet metal, they are preferably stamped with edge flanges 7 that run nearly or quite from their pivotally connected ends to their free ends. One of these flanges 7 is formed as a continuation of the ear 10, or otherwise stated, said ear is formed as a projection of one of said flanges.
What we claim is:
l. A device for applying, removing and sealingMason jar covers comprising a pair of levers pivotally connected at one end and provided, adjacent their pivoted ends, with cover-clamping segments, one of said segments having a depending ear out of line of the levers and a roll journaled thereto and positioned. to engage the edge flange of the jar cover when said clamping segments are applied to the top portion of said cover, said ear being obliquely set and said roll having a conical periphery.
