- WASTE-PIPE. CLEAN-OUT.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 30, 1919.
Application filed April 10, 1918. Serial No. 227,714.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, FRANK FAMoso and SAMUEL ANDERSON, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful'Improvements in aste-Pipe Clean-Outs, of which'the following is a specification.
This invention relates to waste pipe construction and has for its principal object the combination with a waste pipe having a cleanout opening, of a novel form of closure therefor, and sealing means therefor whereby when the closure is fully applied, a perfect air, gas and water tight connection will be formed between the pipe and said closure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a closure for Waste pipes which is so designed that with simple instrumentalities it may be readily applied to or removed from the pipe as the occasion requires.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement of parts which will hereinafter be fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, has been illustrated, a single and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitations are necessarily made to the recise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
Figure 1, is a transverse section through a waste pipe showing the application of the invention thereto.
Fig. 2, is a similar view illustrating a slightly modified form of the invention.
In carrying the invention into practice, we take a waste pipe such as the one illustrated at 5, and form a suitable opening 6, therein which may be of any suitable or desired size. superposed with respect to the opening is a frame 7, the same having an opening 8, which connects with the pipe and as illustrated the walls of the opening are extended in a downward direction into the opening 6, so as to be embraced by the walls thereof. The said frame is Provided with side dove tail clamping projections 99, whose upper surfaces 10, are preferably flat and arranged in the-same general plane with the upper-surfaces 1 1, of the end walls of said frame. On said surfaces 10 and 11, is placed a suitable sealing gasket 12, for a purpose to be hereinafter explained. From the sides of. said frame aprons or skirt portions 13-13, are eX- tended outwardly at 14, and then downwardly at 15, and the latter portions are preferably provided with horizontal lugs 16. These lugs are arranged directly above similar lugs 17, formed at the terminals of a semi-circular yoke 18. Rising from the lugs 17, are threaded studs 19, the same being passed through apertures in the lugs 16, and above the latter and associated with said .studs are clamping nuts 20. In this manner, the frame 7, is adapted to be effectually brought into clamping contact with the pipe. The apron or skirt portions 18, are provided with contacting surfaces 21, which come in mutual engagement with the adjacent eX- terior surfaces of the pipe and the same coacting with the depending walls of the frame so that the opening 6, in the pipe will be strengthened and reinforced.
Located above the frame 7, and adapted to close over the opening in said frame is a closure plate 22, the same having depending lugs 23, which rest against the inner faces of the opening 8. The closure is provided with portions which project over the surfaces 10 and 11, of the frame 7 and which are adapted to come in contact with the gasket 1.2. Slidably arranged upon the dove tail projection 9, of said frame-7, is a clamping bracket 24, the same having angularly arranged branches 25, which co-act with said portions 9, so that upward movement when exerted upon the brackets 25, will not effect its removal from the frame 7. The said bracket is provided with a central boss 26, in which a clamping screw 27, is mounted for adjustment with relation to the closure plate. In this manner it will be appreciated that when adjusting said screw in one direction its pressure will be directly exerted against the closure so as to force the same in sealing contact with the gasket 12.
In order to effectively seal the joint be tween the pipe 5, and the frame 7 I provide the apron or skirt portions 13, with longitudinal channels 28, for the reception of a suitable plastic substance 29, such as putty or theilike. ilhese channels open at their lower ends ontothe' sides of the pipe-s0 that 7 when the yoke 18 and coacting frame 7, are
vadjusted relatively, the surplus sealing sub- 7 stance will be permitted to properly escape opening 6, in the pipe 5, is provided with apron or skirt extensions 31, which come in direct contact with the exterior walls of the pipe, the same being secured to the pipe by solder 32- V What is claimed as new is:
In combination with a pipeprovided with a clean-out opening, a frame adaptedto partiallysurround said pipe, means for securof the inve'antion shown in Fig.2, the-frame 30, which fits the in said frame in place on the pipe, a hollow member carried' by said frame and adapted to project into the cleanout opening in 'con tact with the side walls thereof, a seat forniedfon the upper end of the frame member, a rubber packing positioned on said seat, a yoke member having its free ends adapted to engage the outer walls of the upper portionof said hollow member, a closure plate adapted .to be positioned 011 said packing, and means carried by said yokeand adapted to engage the closure platefor forcing the s'ame'against'the seat on the upper end of the hollow membeix; V V, )p
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures.
FRANK FAMOSO. SAMUEL ANDERSON.
