Description

J. BROPSON. ROOF FLASHNG. -APPUMTION 'man 1m30. 1919.

JAMES BROPSON, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
ROOF-FLASHING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
-Patented Apr. 8, 1919.
Application led January 3 0, 1919. Serial No. 274,053.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES BRoPsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roof-Flashings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to flashings for roofs, and is particularly adapted for use on flat roofs, to make a tight joint around a pipe or the like extending through they roof. A feature of the invention is the use of two rings between which the roofing, or a plate applied thereto, is clamped with a novel form of packed joint, whereby leak is prevented not only between the flashing and the pipe, Ibut also between the flashing and the adjacent part of the roo-f.
In the vaccompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the flashing. Fig. 2 is a sectional view.
The flashing comprises an upper ring 6 and an under ring 7, and the pipe is indicated at 8. The ring 6 has an inner depending part or flange 9 which projects within the opening 10 in the lower ring, a channel 11 being formed on the under side of the upper ring, into which channel a rib or lip l2 on the lower ring projects. Packing 13 of asbestos or the like, is placed in the channel 11 where it is held by the rib 12 on the lower ring, the rings being secured together by bolts or rivets 14- which also extend through the roofing plate or material 15, or, instead of the roofing material, a plate of lead or other material, which is extended into the roofing may be used, and securely clamped by the rivets to the rings.
The space between the pipe 8 and the ring 6 is filled with a packing 16 of lead or similar material, tamped into place, and the Copies of this patent may be obtained for -edge and the other ve cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. 0.
ring h-asa groove 17 into which the is forced, and this groove assists in holding the packing in place.
By the means described, a tight joint is made between the flashing and the roof as well as 'between the flashing and the pipe, and a flashing is produced which will be water-tight for an indefinite period under ordinary conditions.
claim:
l. A flashing comprising upperand lower rings, the upper ring having a channel in its under side, and the lower ring having a rib fitting in said channel, packing between the rib and the channel, and a roof plate having an opening receiving said rings, the edge of the plate around said opening being clamped betwe'en said rings.
2. The combination with a roof plate or layer having an opening, of upper and lower rings between the outer edges of which the roof plate is clamped around said opening, one ring having a channel near yits inner ring having arib near its inner edge fitting in said channel, and packing in the channel.
3. A flashing comprisingthe upper ring 6 having a depending flange 9 at its inner edge, and a channel 11 in its inner side, the lower ring 7 having an opening into which said flange projects and also having a rib 12 fitting in said channel, packing in lthe channel and fastening devices between the irings, adapted-to clamp a roof plate between said rings.
In testimony whereof, I do affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES BROPSON.
