JOHN DEGNAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINGIS.
DOWN-SPOUT HEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. i8, ldll.
Application filed May 17, 1912. Serial No. 697,992.
- To all whom 'it may concer/n:
Be it known that l, JOHN DEGNAN, acitizen l the United States, residing at Chcago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Down-Spent Heads, of which the following isa full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to down-spout heads.
ln the large buildings of the present day the roofs are generally made flat and the water is drained oil? by means of one or more down-spente extending through the roof treatment or' those having occasion to be in their vicinity.
For the purpose of disclosing my invention l have illustrated one embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of the spouthead showing the same in position; and, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the spout-head.
in the embodiment illustrated, the downspout l is shown as coming up to the roof 2. rlhese roofs are usually formed of tile and at the point where it is desired to take ofi.' the water they are sloped downward slightly toward a common center so that the water will run toward this point. 'The downspout head is adapted to be attached to the down-spout l and comprises a base 3 and a cover or cap 4:. The base 3 of cast iron preferably takes the form of a hollow truncated cone with its top turned downwardly and at its lower end is provided with a sorew-thrcaded opening 5 adapted to be threaded onto the top of the downspout l. This opening is provided with a shoulder 6 which is preferably as wide as the pipe is thick, to form a smooth and unobstructed opening into the pipe. rlhe top of the base is provided with an annular flange to which is adapted to be secured the strainer cap 4. rlhe strainer cap 4t of cast brass 1s preferably semi-spherical in shape and lis provided with a central opening 8 and a plurallty of slots 9. An annular liange 10 is also secured to the cap and by means of 6g the flange it is secured to the base 3 by boltsl` 11 Passing through the flange 1o and that flange 7. Due to the fact that theinclina tions'or slopes of the roof vary on dilierent roofs and in order that a water-tight lead may be given to the head` I clamp between the flanges 7 and l0 a flashing 12 which is adapted to be extended up underneath the roof covering the desired distance, the roof covering being adapted to come down and 70 lie flush with the flange l0. This dashing may take any form so far as material is concerned. It may beef sheet copper, sheet steel, sheet rubber, or any desired material.
Preferably, however, it is of some flexible material, so that it may be shaped to fit the roof at the point 'where the spout head is mounted.
ln placing the head in position the base member is inserted in a suitable opening in 8O the roof, and after being screwed down tight onv the top of the down-spout pipe'is filled in around with cement to hold thesame in position. The flashing extends out under the roof covering proper and makes a watertight joint at the meeting anges, so that thewater will not work down along the sides of the base. The cap is screwed tight on the top of thebase.
While I have shown and 'described for the,90
purpose of disclosing my invention one form which the same may take, it will be understood that my invention may be embodied in 4other forms and made of other materials and that it may be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention asset forth in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I cla`i1n as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a down spout comprising a vertical pipe section having an externally threaded upper end, of a down spout head. comprising a funnel shaped member of cast metal having an internally 1055 threaded lower" end screwed onto said threaded upper end, the inner surface of said funnel at its lower end being substantially i continuous with the inner surface of said pipe, said funnel shaped member having an 110 annular flange at its upper end and a lsubstantially hemspherical cap fitting on top Vof said funnel member, the inner Surface of said cap being substntially continuous with Athe inner surface of said funnel member,
screws extending through said flanges for securing themtogether- I In Witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
