TEMPORARY SEAI'ING DEVICE FOR TOILET-ELBOWS.
To all fr0/rom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER BAKER, a cit.i '/.en of the United States, residing atlVorces ter,'in the county of l/Vorcester and Starte of Massachusetts, have invented a new and use* ful Temporary Sealing Device for Toilet- Elbows, of which the following' is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for teniporarily sealing the outer ends of toilet elbows while being installed, in order that the system may be tested in the usual way.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a neat and compact sealing device of this character which may be applied to the elbow and removed therefrom as a whole without mutilating the .metal in any way; also to provide a construction for this purpose of such a character that the sealing and also the unsealing of the elbow can be accomplished in a small fraction of the time originally required, thus constituting a saving in both time and expense; and to provide a device for lthis purpose which will permit of the ordinary manufacture of the elbow at its end in such form that it can be applied to the bowl :in a much more simple and inexpensive, as well as accurate, manner than has been the case heretofore.
Further objects and ad vantages ot' the in-y vention will appear hereinafter.
.Reference is to be had to the aceonmanying drawings, in Which-w Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lead elbow with a preferred embodiment of this invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 :is a plan of the same; and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation thereof on the line 3-3 of Fig. Q.
In the form shown in the drawings, the elbow A is made with an open upper end of just the desirable height and properly fitting the bowl to be applied. The sealing device comprises a two-part metal ring 10 adapted to be clamped by thumb nuts l1 or any other desired means to the top of the elbow A on the outside. Each of the two members of this ring is provided with an integral outwardly extending cam surface 12 on the side. Coperating with this ring is a circular plate 15 having outwardly extending ears 16 at the top provided with downwardly extending lugs having fiat surfaces 17 on `the tops of their inner sides for the purpose of co- Specieation of Letters Patent.

operating with the, lower slanting surfaces of the cams. These ears extend over the top of the elbow A and rest thereon. This plate is connected with a bottom circular plate by means of a screw 21 shown as hollow. l he bottom of this screw 1s securely .fixed to the bottom plate and extends up through the top plate. Between the two plates is a hollow rubber ring or tube 22 which lits over a pair of cylindrical lnojections 23 and 24 on the plates 15 and 2() respectively. These guides extends into the top 4and bottom of the tube respectively` and hold it centered. i
()n the screw above the top plate is a thumb nut 25 adapted to screw down on the top plate and press it toward the bottom plate. .lhc result of thisl pressure is of course to shorten the height; of the rubber' tube and force it to project outwardly at points between its ends. As this tube is made originally so as to fit freely within the pipe. the action of tightening up the nut will obviously expand it and cause it to act as a plug` making a tight joint with the surface of the elbow. ln this way the elbow can be sealed rapidly and effectively and when the test has been made, the lsealing device ran be removed with equal facility. 'lhus there is a considerable saving in time and material. 'lhe end of they elbow can be fitted substantially to the proper shape at the lshop with the knowledge that the test ing operation will not by any possibility get it out of shape. `Consequently it can be made more accurately than heretoili'me and there is no danger of `loss of the whole connection by the operations of an awkward workman. At the same time, thc device is very inexpensive and can be used indefinitely without injury to it.
The iron ring is especially important, as when used on a lead elbow or pipe, it serves to hold the exterior thereof s0 that it will not give under the pressure required to seal it. l\[oreover, this iron ring is lirmly held in place and the pressure of the water within has to overcome this friction before it can blow out the plug. Therefore, the plug will stand a high pressure.
Although I have illustrated and described only a single embodiment of the invention, I am aware of the fact that many modications can be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to all the details of con- Yried by said plate for sealing the interior of the elbow inside said ring and securely'holding the plate in position on the elbow.
2. As an article of manufacture, a. sealing device for the purpose described, comprising a ring adapted to be secured to the end of a pipe or the like and having a pair of opposite projecting surfaces near the edge thereof, a plate adapted to engage the end of the pipe and having ears extending over said surfaces and provided with surfaces under said ears for: engagingthem, an expansible plug carried by said plate, and means on the plate for expanding the plug.

As anarticle of manufacture, asealing device for the purpose described, comprising a ring adapted Vto be secured to the en d of a pipe or the like and having a pair of opposite projecting surfaces near the edge Vsaid surfaces and thereof, a plate adapted to engage the end` of the pipe and having ears extending over provided with surfaces under said ears for engaging them, a second plate parallel with the first plate aud adapted to extend into the pipe, an expansible'cyrlindrical member located between the' two plates at their edges, and means for forcing the two plates together to expand said memn ber against the inside of the pipe.
4. in a device of the character described, the combination with a ring adapted t0 tit the exterior of an elbow or the like, a plate Aadapted to be secured to said ring over the end of the elbow, a second plate adapted to extend within theelbow, the two plates each,
having on their inner surfaces a projecting ring spaced from 'the edge of the plate, a rubber ring surrounding said irings, and centered thereby and vlocated Vbetween the edges of the plates, and means for forcing said plates together to expand the rubber ring.
