No. 672,046. Patented Apr. l6, mm. c. TAYLOR.
JAR CLOSURE.
(Application filed Apr. 23, 1900.)
(No Model.)
THE Norms versus no. PNOYO-L|THO., WASNINGTON. o. c
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALL TAYLOR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
JAR-CLOSU RE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 672,046, dated April 16, 1901.
Application filed April 23, 1900.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CALL TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the countyof Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ar-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for closing and sealing jars, bottles, and the like, and has for its objects the production of means for secu rely sealing jars with the least amount of difficulty and furnishing an apparatus for this purpose that will be readily adapted to fit jars of various sizes, that can be easily applied and removed, and that will form a protection for the jar. I accomplish these objects by means of combining with a flanged bottom ring united with a top yoke a device for pressing against the top or cover of the jar and a suitable gasket between the cover and the jar.
I have illustrated my device in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a detail of the bottom ring with the jar removed. Fig. 3 is a modified form of clamping device. Fig. 4 is a detail of the gasket.
A is a jar having the flanged top (1, "adapted to receive a cover B. A gasket C, of rubber or other suitable material, is provided to engage with the flanged mouth of the jar.
The jar A sets on a ring or annulus D, having an upwardly-projecting flange d and provided with lugs 01, into which are screwed the threaded rods 6, that unite the bottom member with the yoke F. An eccentric clamp H is pivoted to the top yoke F and provided with a spring 77,, which-is adapted to press against the head of a pin '6, which passes through a hole in the yoke and engages with the cover of the jar.
The gasket C (shown in Fig. 4) is rectan- Serial No- 18,94=O. (No model.)
gular in cross-section and provided with a groove 0 in the lower side thereof. It rests upon a flange 0. around the top of the jar, which is provided with a raised ring at around the inner edge thereof to engage with a similar ring. on the flanged cover B. With this form of gasket the jar can be securely and perfectly sealed, as the groove in the side allows a slight flattening or compression of the gasket. The air will be compressed in the groove and a double seal formed, one at the inner and one at the outer edge of the gasket.
When the jar is filled and the cover put on ready to be sealed, it is simply placed in position in the frame and the clamp-pin forced down with sufficient pressure to make an airtight joint between the cover and the jar. When the jar is to be opened, the pin is released by throwing back the clamp and the cover readily removed. It is seen that this does away with the vexatious sticking and the difficulty usually experienced in opening an ordinary jar having a screw cover. This clamp may be used with a new jar in case one becomes broken and can be applied to various sizes of jaws.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A jar-frame consisting of a flanged annulus, threaded rods connecting said annulus with a top yoke, a pin through said yoke adapted to engage the jar-cover, a springcam supported on said yoke for pressing down 'the pin; said frame being adapted to be used with a jar having an enlarged top with an extending flange, a grooved gasket and flanged cover substantially as described.
CALL TAYLOR.
