When the plut,r is forced inward into the neck of the jar, the lower or inner portion of the'elastic packing-ring is frietionally engaged and compressed by the plug as soon as the lower shoulder passes the seat. This operation causes the plug to slip through the packing-ring, 'which con forms to the configuration of the neck of the jar, and when the upper shoulder engages the packing-ring the latter is spread over the seat,and the jar is effectively sealedfu 'l`hc sealing action of the device may be increased h v providing an upwardly-projecting beveled rib 12, as illustrated in Fig-3. The oppositebv beveled or tapered rib l2 is adapted to be partialhv embedded in the lower face of the upper or outer portion of the elastic packing-ring, and the latter is tightly compressed against the jar and the beveled face of the upper .shoulder and a positive seal is provided. This construction is especially adapted for receptacles havincr more or lr-ss irregularities in the engaging faces of the neck and the plug. .p
