To ALL WHoM rr 'MAY coNcERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. SIDDONS, of the city of-Rochester, State of New York, have invented o new and useful Fruit-Jar; and I do hereby declare that the following thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making is a vertical section ofmy invention.
This invention consists in providing fruit-jars with a cover and neel; that will exclud pheric pressure on thc'coven-'after it is lled'with fruit and sirup.
To enableothers to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.I
I make my jar with a. neck, having projection on the inside for the coverland packing to rest' on, shown ut O O. I form my cover by taking a piece of tinotl suilcient size, and with die, or other suitable machine, make it concave, so that a rim, B, is formed around the outside, at right angles to the bottom, o'r nearly so, as shown at J J, at the same'o'peration turning a. Harige, P P, on this rim, anti thusfornied, the diameter of the ange will be alittle less than the diameter' of the mouth of the jar, so that it will enter easily, but larger than the diameter of the inside projection ofthe neck at O O,"s othat the cover will have a. substantial bearing on the projection. I put a suitablepacking between the cover and projection O O to make it air-tight.v To the top of the cover, I attach a ring, K, for the'purpose of drawin.,r it' from the jar. i
I rlhe mode of using this jar and cover is to. fill it with fruit and sirup, up nearly to the projection O O, while hot, and then spring the packing-ring over the vertical portion of the cover, and place the cover with the packing solapplied, within the noch, and press it down to tbe projection .O O.
The operation of this cover is such that, as the fruit cools, avacuum is formed to a certain extent in thc jar, and it is` pressed down by the outside atmosphere. It will be seen vthat thetpacking is conned'on two sides bythe rim B and the flange P P, and on the other two sides bythe projection OA O and the neck of' the jar, and thus a perfect joint is effected by the atmospheric pressure.
. The great desideratum gained with this cover is *the clica can be made, so that it may be stampedout by one -blow and material. y
What I- claim as my invention, und desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is-
The fruit-jar cover, composed of a single sheetfmetal plate, P, and used in combination with the ordinary. packing-ring as and for the purposes set forth.
is a. full, clear, and exact description e the air by the atmosp end eicien't manner of producing it. A die having a vertical rin, Bv, and projecting flange, LA, and jar having an internal shoulder or'projection,
