APPLIGATION FILED DEG. 8, 1902.

\VILLIAM STENDER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
COMBINED BOTTLE AND STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,053, dated March 3, 1903.
Application filed December 8, 1902. Serial No. 134,322. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM STENDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bottle and Stopper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to insure gas-tight fit of aluminium stoppers in bottles containing carbonated beverages, especially beer; and it consists in what is hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a sectional View of a bottle-neck and an aluminium stopper seated therein with a gasket to constitute a gas tight stopper for the same; Fig. 2, a similar view of the bottle-neck and stopper before the latter is set gas-tight in the former; and Fig. 3, a plan view of said stopper as it appears in the second figure, the proportions in all the views being considerably greater than actual size.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates the neck portion of a bottle contracted in the throat to form a horizontal annular shoulder b, and which is also indented immediately above the shoulder to form therewith an annular groove 0 0f gradually-increasing diameter in a downward direction.
An aluminium stopper B for the bottle is normally in the shape of a cup having an upper downwardly-flaring outer flange d, as is best shown in Fig. 2, and a gasket 0 of any suitable packing material is arranged to face the inner side of said flange. It is also preferable, as herein shown, to indent the lower portion of the stopper-wall to provide an inwardly-projecting lug 6 under which to catch the point of an extracting-tool.
The stopper as made for the trade in the shape above specified is placed in the bottleneck to have the gasket-lined flange thereof rest on the horizontal inner shoulder 19 of said neck, after which it is subjected to pressure and forced farther down, whereby its flange is laid parallel to said shoulder over the interposed gasket, said flange and gasket being extended into the lower portion of the bottle-neck groove 0, as shown in Fig. 1. The stopper is now gas-tight in the bottle-neck and cannot be removed without the aid of an extracting-tooth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Abottle having the neck portion thereof contracted in the throat to form a horizontal annular shoulder and also indented immediately above the shoulder to therewith form an annular groove of gradually-increasing diameter in a' downward direction, together with an aluminium stopper having normally the form of a cup provided with an upper outer downwardly-flaring gasket-lined flange, but which is pressed down in the bottle-neck to extend its flange and the gasket therewith parallel to said' shoulder and within said groove.
2. A bottle having the neck portion thereof contracted in the throat to form a horizontal annular shoulder and also indented immediately above the shoulder to therewith form an annular groove of gradually-increasing diameter in a downward direction, together with an aluminiumstopper having normally the form of a cup provided with an inner wall-lug and an upper our-er downwardly-flaring gasket-lined flange, but which is pressed down in the bottle-neck to extend its flange and the gasket therewith paralleik WILLIAM STENDER.
