PATENT OFFICE.
JERSEY,-ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT JAR COMPANY, 0F vBRIDGE- JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 110,730,903, dated June 16, Application led lay 29.1902. Serial No. 109.529. (No modal.)
To all, whom it may concern:
lie it known thatI, FRANK II. (lsoxm resident of Bridgeton, in the county of (,uuiherland and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Jars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enahle others skilled in the art to which itl appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relatesto an improvement in jars, and more part-ienlarlyto closures therefor, the object of the invention being to provide a jar with a large mouth or opening to facilitate itsbeing cleaned and provide a cover or closure which will tit into the mouth or opening in the jar, compress a rnhhcr ring or gasket. on a seat located in the jar, and, further, to provide improved fastening mechanism which will tirmlyseeure the cover or closure in place to seal the jar or permit, the removal of the cover when desired.
\\'ith these ohjects in view the invention consists in certain novel features ot' const ruction and (.oinhinatons and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating my improvements. l-`ig. :2 is a view in longitudinal section. Fig. It is a view in section illustrating the closure partially removed, and Fig. 4 isa similar view showing the employment. of a round gasket.
l represents a jar, preferably of glass, pressed into the shape shown and provided aty the inner edge ot' its mouth with a recessed lwripheral seat :3 for a rubber ring or gasket. 8, which may be angular in cross-section or round, ns shown in Fig. 4.
4 represents the cover or closure, which is provided with a depressed center 5 to tit into the mouth ot' the jar and have the rubber gasket 3 sprung thereon and lt snugly in the seat. 2 when the cover is forced into position.
A wire ti is secured around a lwripheral recess in the jur near its month and hashingcd thereon spring sheet-un-tal clamps 7, located on dialnet ricnlly opposite sides ofthe jar, and
as many of said clamps 4may he provided as desired, although two will perform all necessary functions. 'Fliese clamps 7 comprise a strip of spring met al bent around wire 6 to hinge the same thereto. The strip then extends upward, as shown at S, and is bent into a curved offset El to tit over a peripheral shoulder 10 on the cover, and t-hen extends along the tlattop of the cover, as shown at 11, and is heut downward and upward, as shown at 12, to project against the depressed portion of the cover and form a linger-hold to permit` the ready manipulation of the clamps.
In operation the jar is completely filled with fruit or preserves, as the ease may be. "he cover, with the gasket thereon, is then inserted into the month of the jar and firmly clamped in its clamps to hold ,the gasket firmly on its seat and seal the jar air-tight.'
Many changes and alterations might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence 'I do not wish to limit myself to the precise construction set forth, hut consider myself at liberty to make -sueh slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope ot my invention.A
llavin g fully described my invention, wlmt I claim as new, aml desire to secure by Letters Iatent, is
l The combination with a. jar provided with` a mouth having an annular recess in the inner edge thereof aml a cover having a depressed portion to enter the month of the jar and a peripheral shoulder to be disposed over the mouth ot' the jar, of a flexible gasket surrounding the depressed portion of theeover and engaging the under face of the peripheral shoulder, said gasket seated on the bottom of the annular recess in the mouth of the jar and also engaging the vertical wall of said recess and clamps connect ed with the jar and engaging the cover. j
2.
